This presents a serious challenge to those of us in 'AI positive' institutions, where we have no choice but to engage with AI to some extent. (Tho' students here have an ethical opt-out, teachers do not.) We must educate our students about ALL aspects of AI, including the (un)ethical underpinning.

This is really important. Academics (on the whole 😬) are good at engaging with the public, enthusing them about research and showing them that universities are doing useful and interesting things. Let them do this.

Voluntary redundancy extended, *this* time with the explicit message that the now-possibly-inevitable compulsory redundancies will get smaller payoffs. Plus we’ve got a figure now that the university is trying to save, and lots of fun ways they might try to save it.

My understanding is that the evidence shows LLM-based assessment gives better 'marks' to LLM-written things (essays, grants etc). So by choosing to use LLM-based assessment, UKRI will likely penalise every academic who actually writes their own grants unassisted. Grim.

Ok. Didn't plan this, got friends waiting, and I'm writing it anyway. Jason Arday resigned a week ago, saying the accusations had "taken a profound toll on me and on those I love." Friday they found him dead in Battersea. This is one newspaper. 🧵
A dark-mode Google search results page showing around forty-four articles about Jason Arday, every one of them from The Telegraph, dated between 24 July and 14 August 2026. Headlines include "Jason Arday found dead", "Jason Arday is living proof that you reap what you sow", "A PhD is no longer a sign of brilliance – take it from Dr Arday", "We are all Jason Arday now", "The Cambridge fantasist is proof that stupid intellectuals…", "Cambridge diversity poster boy faces questions over pig's…", "The Arday debacle is a great opportunity for the Left", and "Police investigated journalist who tried to expose…". Most of the standing descriptions refer to him as Cambridge's youngest black professor.
