As I am finalizing the revision of the multiple equilibrium paper, I found this book to be a good read. LLMs do not "solve" NP hard problems at the moment -- cryptography would be in trouble. This is a fruitful area for microeconomists, eg Fajgelbaum's paper on Optimal Transport Networks.

Urbanization and trade go hand in hand. Beating the law of gravity in trade and urbanization is tough, as it is one of the most robust results of economics. But as the center of gravity of trade shifts north, Canada has a chance to reshape its urban patterns around its exporting cores.

Evidence from Japan shows that ageing and depopulation hit rural regions first. Outmigration from shrinking regions today reduces births tomorrow. However, policies that reduce spatial inequality also reduce aggregate efficiency. @eligiannone.bsky.social et al. cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
Figure shows the historical demographic divergence across Japanese municipalities between 1980 and 2010. Older municipalities in 1980 lost population and aged further, while younger municipalities tended to grow and remain younger.

Policy debates about ageing and shrinking populations often treat the problem as a national one. This column presents evidence from Japan showing that it is also profoundly spatial: ageing and depopulation hit rural regions first. Outmigration from shrinking regions today reduces births tomorrow, which makes the origin region older still. However, policies that reduce spatial inequality also reduce aggregate efficiency, presenting a trade-off that leaves policymakers with the challenge of choosing among different goals.

General Equilibrium Effects in Space: Theory and Measurement
(Forthcoming Article) - We examine the general-equilibrium effect of the China shock on US regions. We demonstrate that spatial linkages intensify the shock’s negative impact on employment across regions, leading to differential effects that are substantially larger than predictions from existing quantitative models. To address this disconnect, we develop a reduced-form representation of the impact of trade shocks in spatial models. Regional responses combine the direct effect of local shock exposure and its indirect spatial effects. Our approach extends shift-share empirical strategies and indicates that employment losses were amplified by strong agglomeration forces, large employment sensitivity to wages, and spatial and production linkages.
