How are authoritarians able to win over so many white people? And convince them that they’re better off with fewer rights and economic instability? And what will it take to beat them at their own game...

To non-Alaskans, this may not be obvious: Here we have no good season for drive-in movies. Generally, by the time it's warm enough to sit outside for a nighttime show, it's also too light outside at night to see a movie screen well. Our loss.

We are at the break glass moment on the Democratic Party and its treatment of transgender people, and it is my opinion that if we don’t act now and loudly demand to be heard, we will suffer the consequences of their shift.

Saw this well-named bookstore recently in London.
A green storefront reading, at the top, ANY AMOUNT OF BOOKS, The Charing X Road Bookshop. Large windows in front showing books on display. Pedestrians are passing at right, and a white Mercedes-Benz van is parked at left.

Fairbanks:
This is a facebook post from Danielle Gammon. She reports her daughter Alice is missing. That she had breakfast at Tanana Middle School and then apparently left. Alice is 12, about 5'2" and 100 lbs. she was wearing a light blue hoodie and light pink glasses that look almost clear. They have filed a police report and checked at both youth shelters.

I told the @marypeltola.com campaign: I will literally not rank Peltola if she takes a step further in her anti-trans rhetoric. And if they want my campaign contribution, she will not only walk back those remarks but will FULLY ADVOCATE for the safety and equality of our transgender siblings.

Just finished 'Mediocre' by @ijeomaoluo.bsky.social — and it was fantastic. A true education in how white men and the forces of white-male supremacy have routinely oppressed and disenfranchised women and people of color, often at the expense of the white men themselves.
Yellow book cover. In the center is the top of a person in a white shirt, red necktie, and blue jacket. In place of a head is a large white balloon on which is written the title, Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America. The name of the author, Ijeoma Oluo, is across the top.

Dear library patrons: When you ask a librarian for research help, please try to be succinct* about what you're trying to do and what in particular you want. It's not just about saving the time of the person helping you; the more details you throw in, the less idea they have what you want.

A guy named Tim_after_Tim on Threads saw an encounter that made him understand why women would rather meet a bear in the forest than a man. So, he decided to do something. He made this poster, and a website where anyone can learn or download it — beabear.org:
BE A BEAR
Women say they'd rather encounter a bear than an unknown man alone in the woods.
Don't take it personally. Take it seriously.
HELP WOMEN FEEL SAFER ON THE TRAIL. FOLLOW THE BEAR CODE:
1
MAKE YOUR PRESENCE
KNOWN EARLY
When approaching from behind, call out calmly from a distance:
"Hi, passing on your left."
Don't suddenly appear beside her.
2
PASS PREDICTABLY
When letting someone pass, step into an open, visible spot. When passing, do it promptly rather than lingering beside her.
3
GIVE SPACE
Don't tailgate or match her pace from behind. Pass efficiently or drop well back. If she seems uneasy, create more distance.
4
KEEP IT FRIENDLY, NOT FLIRTY
A brief hello or nod is fine. Keep it neutral, take your cue from her response, and move on without taking offense if she doesn't engage.
5
AVOID PERSONAL
QUESTIONS
Don't ask whether she's alone, where she lives or is staying, or her exact route or schedule-even as casual conversation.
6
ASSUME COMPETENCE
Skip comments about her gear, pace, body, or preparedness, and don't offer advice unless asked. Speak up only for an immediate, specific hazard.
7
BE AN ALLY
If someone is making a woman feel unsafe, step in to help. Create distance, offer to stay with her or help her reach other people, and call for help if needed. Follow her lead and don't escalate.

I saw "Coyote vs. Acme" last night and, honestly, found it good but not great. Yes, a little touching. But not surprising. And, if it had anything great to say, I missed it. Compare to "The LEGO Movie," which looked like it should be corporate fluff but had important points about creative freedom.

Anybody else noticing a decline in use of the subjunctive mood in English? I've just read "What's critical is that your journey BEGINS" [rather than 'begin'] and recently heard something like "It's vital that he DOES this" [rather than 'do'] — and it really grates me, though I know what was meant.
