This essay from @ijeomaoluo.bsky.social! ❤️‍🔥! "And as long as living is just this simple diminished thing - your heartbeat, your comfort, your privilege - your life will be fragile. It will be at great risk. But if your life is your connection to people...your life is stronger than the state..."

Finally getting into “Be A Revolution” by @ijeomaoluo.bsky.social while under the dryer and taking it with me on my travels tomorrow. Feeling like this book is more important than ever right now.
A book cover with Be (orange background) A (pink background) Revo Lution (yellow background) in stacked black text against a white background. A bright pink border on the right has a line from the SF Chronicle.

New York Times best selling author of “So Yiu Want to Talk About Race” is above the authors name; Ijeoma Oluo

I'm so fucking sick of this passive language. OUR communities are under attack and have been under attack.
Image description: a text image that says: "If authorities came and abducted your parent, your spouse, your sibling or your child you wouldn’t be “concerned” or even simply “worried”

You’d be fucking enraged.

But right now the people that you view as outside of your community are simply cautionary tales to you.

And that’s how fascism is scaring you into silence instead of action."

I'm an abolitionist but I also absolutely have a Book Jail: The bottom corner of my bookshelf where I put the books that have annoyed me or are by authors who annoy me. Stacked page out so I don't have to see the covers.

I hate socks, but I hate sweaty feet and stinky shoes more. So I spend all day going "oh gawd what's wrong with my feet? What is choking my ankles?" Last night I was feeling so panicked and couldn't remember why & then I remembered I was still wearing socks. We need a better solution.

Did you know that the publishing industry doesn't like big books? It's always been so weird to me, because when I love a book I want it to go on forever. But if you aren't an Obama & you write non-fiction, they usually want 100k words or less...

Great question! This year has definitely radicalized me further, but it's also brought me closer to the heart of the book as our systems become more oppressive. Now we need to fight for each other & care for each other more than ever. But I would add that disruption is a vital part of revolution

Imagine calling yourselves abolitionists & then cackling about the "punishment" you think immigrants & Palestinians deserve. This is what a colonized mind does. This idea of collective punishment is at the root of so much harm done to us, & at the root of genocide. We have to break this pattern.

It is long past time to set aside our fear and access our outrage. Please know that we can build something better than this.
When we talk about abolition, when we talk about systemic oppression, when we talk about revolution vs. harm reduction: this is what we’re talking about.

We’re talking about systems that were never going to save us because they are too wed to oppression. We are talking about representatives that have never had any intention of representing us.

We’re talking about the foundations of fascism that have been long built and have only been strengthened in recent years by our desire for comfort over liberation.

It is long past time to set aside our fear and access our outrage.

Please know that we can build something better than this.
