An amazing glimpse into Mesolithic everyday life: this more than 7,500-year-old ring was made from heather roots, carefully rolled up and prepared for later use. It was discovered at the settlement of Motala/Sweden, where the same material was used for fish traps. Dating 5750–5550 BC. 🧵1/2 📷me

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

Genuine AI q: do we have any good practice gudelines and/or methodologies for accuracy testing humanities projects? E.g I get gen AI to scan a load of wills & make a database of bequests/value/gender/location etc - obvs I have no idea what it made up. So how many instances “should” I manually check?

The provost of UMass (R1) literally told a group of historians this: “research” means pulling in large external grants and unless you do that, you don’t matter and get nothing internally. “Research“ is about $ and institutions support only those disciplines that bring in $ or raise it privately.

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

#Caturday Can anyone suggest what cat w boots on its left legs is doing on Otranto Cathedral's #medieval mosaic floor? Placed above elephant supporting Tree of Life, it's one of many enigmas in the floor's earthly/Biblical/mystical themes, perhaps only known to monk Pantaleon, its creator in 1165.
A short-tailed cat in various shades of red mosaic tiles, wearing black boots on its left legs, appears above an elephant, also in a variety of red. The figures are on a background of white-ish tiles, and their bodies and all their features are outlined in a single row of black tiles. On the
elephant's back is a brownish blob, which actually depicts the tree of life, supported by the elephant and extending beyond this area 52 meters up the nave of the cathedral (beyond the photo).
