From the very beginning of this recent obsession with identifying everyone online (yes, they like to call it "age" verification, but it always ends up as identity verification), we've been pointing out that it was a huge privacy nightmare waiting to happen. It's increasing clear the primary uses of our surveillance state are not to prevent crime or to track down criminals, but to engage in criminal activity. Nothing about that should be surprising given the elaborate legal structures we have in place to create a culture of impunity in law enforcement.

Someone gave me a "summary" that some AI had produced of a panel I was on, including pull quotes. The quotes were all invented -- no one on the panel said that stuff -- even though the AI was given an audio recording of the whole thing. I told them to trash it and did the transcription myself.

Great piece on the largely imaginary shoplifting surge: I do think one thing the piece misses is that a bunch of major police departments started years-long work slowdowns in 2020 where they refused to do their jobs (often falsely claiming their hands were tied by woke prosecutors)

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick. Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.

Traditional American politics is premised on the notion that sometimes you lose and sometimes you win and you have to deal with that. But Trumpism is premised on the notion that any result where you don’t win is illegitimate, unlawful, fraud, criminal. You can’t negotiate with people like that.
