When Edward Teller was chair of the early AEC Reactor Safeguards Committee, he was considered extremely conservative in his safety demands. His reasoning was that even one catastrophic accident could destroy all public enthusiasm for a technology he believed was important.

"Participants afterwards also saw Jonah as more human than Johanna..." Very disturbing. Misogyny so ingrained, participants dehumanized bots with the exact same coding. Given how many use AI voice assistants such as Alexa and Siri, how does their use entrench this kind of mental infrastructure?

I've been thinking and talking and writing about the death penalty for my whole adult life and the past week+ has been truly surreal and exhausting, not only because of the onslaught of horrors but because there seems to be so little historical memory of what this system is and always has been.

anyway, watching "old" films and shows requires me to shake my head at how things used to work. i wonder how long it will linger in our art. (i actually stopped answer unknown numbers once we got caller ID. i also often neglect voicemail, so that's not a workaround you can use.)

amber bird @amberbird.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
if you think repeatedly calling from that number in a short time will inspire the urgency to get someone (who isn't a boomer or older OR a parent, i guess) to answer anyway, instead of just blocking your number, you and i have very different understandings of modern communication

amber bird @amberbird.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
if your plan involves calling me from a number not in my contacts—or, really, calling me from any number without prior arrangement—it is probably going to fail. if your contemporary story starts with someone answering a call from an unknown number, your story is going nowhere. it's not the 1900s.

What is very clearly going to actually happen is that Ellison will succeed entirely in knocking out key load-bearing parts of television, making it much much less resilient. Think about how reality tv was created in response to a writer's strike, how you can see exactly when it happened in series

It’s simply not true that “no one has a good answer on what to do with rapists.” In fact, there is a depth of feminist scholarship on exactly this subject. It’s just that people won’t engage with it seriously since none of it says “nah you gotta be nice to the rapist cause that’s your buddy.”
