it's bi visibility day! there are 237 days until BLOOD OF QUEENS hits the shelves! is it bi? is it queer? is it both of those and more? look, all I'm gonna say: Dani's no Lady, Matherin sure is a Prince, and Zivriel? well, Zivriel has two hands >:D
A graphic introducing the cover mockup of the book Blood of Queens by Macey Levington (a dark grey fake cover with white title text), surrounded by lighter grey tropes. These include: historical fantasy, disaster OT3, is it murder if they only die a little?, alt hist with a twist, be gay do crime, accidental death god Henry VIIIth, and stealing from necromancers is a deathly affair. There is a friendly waving skeleton. The novel is comped as 'Lies of Locke Lamora meets Gideon the Ninth by way of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies.'

Stopped by the local to pick up my Blacktail preorder the other day and was aghast that the bookseller (who is a specfic person!!) hadn't heard of Mount Char. Ugh!!! If 'Dark Cosmic Academia' was a genre that went 'squelch' and also played 3D chess with the time stream. I should read it again.

trying to decide between a somewhat eclectic set of reading/research options to bring on my writing retreat is the hardest part of packing... because these are not all gonna fit in my baggage weight allowance... unless I wear the same clothes all week... 🤔🤔📚🪨😵

sometimes emptying the library in preparation for a facelift forces one to confront one's literary foundations. in this case in the format of the Leaning Tower of McCaffrey 🤔

y'know, I don't know which was more hypnotizing: the eclipse, or to stand by the side of a little city park at 9pm saying 'have you looked at the moon?' to passers-by and see them stop, with looks of wonder, and join me. five minutes, ten, longer. no one brushed it off. there's magic in strangers.

the answer, btw, is 'notch binding' (or possibly 'burst binding'). did we know about this? I did not know about this & it is super cool!!! perfect-bound books are glued loose pages but burst or notched retain signatures, thus the arches 😱 (Diagrams found in rhollick.wordpress.com/2018/04/06/b...)
A diagram of three styles of glued spines for bookbinding.
1: "Perfect binding: spine roughened and glued" - in diagram pages are cut
2: "Notch binding: spine notched and glued" - in diagram pages are in signatures and wide holes notched
3: "Burst binding: spine perforated and glued" - in diagram pages are in signatures and small holes are pierced and glued

edits are more fun than drafting. there I said it. I have to speak my truth!!! edits are puzzle-boxes, they are logic problems made of art, they are graspable! drafting is the cosmic horror of gazing unto the infinite and pinky-promising you'll take notes if it consents to wink back in morse code 😭

okay book industry friends, do I know anyone who knows anyone on the PHYSICAL book construction side of the industry On Here? because I just keep having questions. so many questions. for example: what on earth is going on with this perfect binding. who are NYRB using and what are they DOING.
A close-up photograph of the spine of a paperback perfect bound book, that nonetheless looks as if it might be sewn. There are visible center partings and curved folios.A close up of the same books spine from the other side. This time, it appears far more as if the pages have been cut. They are arranged in pyramids and seem to be pointed. There is no evidence of curved folios or center parts.
