I'm so so very tired of getting a constant stream of emails re my new (not yet out!) book that begin like this 🫩 I guess I'm just going to have to set up an email filter for the phrase "I recently came across" and "especially caught my attention"
An AI-generated spam email that reads: Dear Amanda,

I recently came across Digital Photography After AI, and I was immediately struck by the way you approach AI-generated images not simply as a new technological development, but as something that forces us to reconsider what photography itself means. The question of whether an image that looks indistinguishable from a photograph should be understood as photography at all creates a fascinating starting point for examining the boundaries between image-making, technology, and representation.

What especially caught my attention was the historical scope of the book.

ChatGPT uses sources now, they said. It's more reliable, they said. Great images/sources for this made up art historian "Seth Drimmer" (alter ego of @sonjadrimmer.bsky.social I assume)
A picture of a researcher in Hong Kong at an auction house with a description of Seth Drimmer created by chatgpt that says: Seth Drimmer
Seth Drimmer is an American art historian and curator known for his expertise in modern and contemporary art. His work has focused on twentieth-century visual culture, curatorial practice, and the intersections between art history and the art market. Drimmer is recognized for his scholarship and for roles within prominent art institutions and auction houses.

• Specialization: Modern and contemporaryJust a bunch of irrelevant links for 'seth group' and 'seth music' etc. more irrelevant links for 'drums by seth' and 'seth computer'An art expert from Christie's talks about... getty screenshot showing the person is not Seth Drimmer

The passage on photography, for example is so wrong imo: photography wasn't accepted as art because people didn't *realize* there were choices to be made or there was skill was involved (it got easier to make photos over time ofc) but rather it was conscious recontextualization
