i do think his intentions for Susan in that book were very poorly executed, but i'm so tired of seeing adults say "C.S. LEWIS SENT SUSAN TO HELL!!1!" 1) no he didn't; she didn't die yet in-universe 2) Lewis' theology of hell is far far different than evangelical protestant theologies of hell

On the one hand, The Silver Chair smacks of gender in a way even my 6 year old-at-the-time clocked when we read it aloud. On the other hand, PUDDLEGLUM

The Pilgrimage of Annie Dillard
The celebrated author, who passed away this week, had two great themes: seeing and suffering.

I imprinted on Pilgrim at Tinker Creek when I was 16. I still think it’s marvelous. I’m also quite attached to For the Time Being, as well as a weird little book of found poems called Mornings Like This. Annie Dillard was the best.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

I had zero trouble getting a COVID booster from Costco in Bloomingdale, IL today, if you’re local and looking to get this done. Mine was Pfizer. Also, I think it hurt less than previous boosters? I don’t know why this would be.

therapy will not fix you. self-medication will not fix you. working out, eating healthy and finding good hobbies will not fix you. the only thing that will fix you (a single man in possession of a good fortune) is a wife.

I just. Like. On the one hand. Building on extant stories is a grand tradition. The entirety of Greek tragedy, let's tell old stories in new ways. Best plays ever written. The problem is not retelling old stories. It's lacking the imagination to find old stories with more meat on the bone. 1/3

If ICE treating your wife this way is an outrage today, then ICE treating somebody else's loved one this way was an outrage yesterday, is an outrage today, and will be an outrage tomorrow. Simple lesson. The question is whether Trump voters burned by the system will actually learn it.👇

I could swap for fluorescent rage (cover a broad range at once, be harsh, make constant annoying sounds in the background) or splurge for LED (more focused and sustainable, but higher up front investment)

An Instagram ad from neverhaveiever.shop, showing a set of press on nails designed like the Matisse art that is on the cover of the The Body Keeps The Score book (a stylized black figure on a blue background, surrounded by stars). There are thumbnails below that showing other art-inspired nails.

it's both gratifying & annoying when I feel better the day after skipping activities in order to Strictly Rest. On the one hand: resting works, I was right to rest! on the other: the thing I was going to participate is now over, & who knows how I'll feel in a few days when it's time for another.

Let’s be done normalizing scrupulosity & its distorted theology. Tozer was an absent father of 7 who spent hours in private devos. He donated his salary sporadically & irresponsibly & refused to buy “materialistic” things like…a car, leaving his wife & kids to deal w/fallout.🧵

The local immediate care is basically my Cheers. I walk in and the staff already know me and say “ALYSSA you must have missed us in the three days since you were last here!” This is very kind, but I would prefer a Third Space that isn’t a medical waiting room.

My kids have lately enjoyed the Netflix update of Carmen Sandiego. My main criticism is that they should have made use of the 90’s PBS show theme song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMqf...

I think late diagnosed autistic people who genuinely believe that early diagnosis is a privilege should do the math, look up what the treatments and attitudes toward autism were like in their youth, and explain exactly what they believe they missed out on and what their outcome would have been.
