i think it's easy to get wrapped up in the theoretical arguments but afaict the empirical observation that public execution is the project of the evil impulse within society, and it is present to the extent that that evil impulse is successful, is just true.

Meanwhile, back where we started. I said this morning: Notable that Anthropic is more interested in protecting Claude from humans than humans from Claude. Not just Anthropic. The misdirection of empathy says a lot.

New open-access paper: Direct File showed that govt could build its own user-centered platform without relying on contractors. But the product was killed after a DOGE lead spoke with the private tax preparation industry lobbying against a private option. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
The ability of governments to build and sustain public interest capacity partly depends upon the position of private interests, and the ability and willingness of a government to resist private interest opposition.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) built a digital tax reporting service, Direct File, that created significant public value for users.
Direct File depended upon the creation of internal capacity: a government digital service team that could build digital platforms, rather than procuring a product from private vendors. Government control of the process allowed agile development and iterative improvement that would have been impossible under a traditional outsourcing model.
Long-standing opposition to Direct File by the private tax preparation industry, combined with Trump-era downsizing by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led to the elimination of the tool.

One key point @nicholasgrossman.bsky.social makes here is that if Dems win the midterms (and win in 2028), deploying congressional power creatively to unwind Elon Musk's sway over the government (contracts, etc) will be essential to any reconstruction: www.ms.now/opinion/elon...

This is right. The issue is that LLMs are at best a $50 billion/year revenue type business and they've invested in it like it's going to be $500 billion/year in revenue or more. The mismatch is potentially trillions in capex overspend which is enough to cause a deep recession when the bubble pops.

Remarkable how consistently the Trump administration has adopted the aesthetics of mass shooters, from their schizophrenic social media aesthetic to livestreamed executions to masked men with long guns roaming our streets with impunity. Nihilist violent extremism as statecraft

Social media companies need to be explicitly pressured into not allowing any images of the execution on their services. They have the content recognition systems to block it. If they allow it, it's an abdication of any responsibility to their users. There will be children that see it.

If you go into a church with a lot of traumas, addictions, etc - you are much more likely to *stay* in that church if they teach you that those prior ‘sins’ were caused by an ‘adversary’ who can only be defeated with their help & with regular church attendance

Spies, infiltrators, whatever you call them - they do deep damage to social trust, and societies have a tendency to inflict on the few they catch punishment equal to *all* the damage caused by those not caught.
