Worth remembering that if it costs the government $4.5b to reverse the gender pay tax, then it costs the women affected $4.5b to leave it in place.

"In politics, there should be a similar saying: “Amateurs talk about outcomes. Professionals study processes.” In that formulation, how we do something can be more important than what we hope to accomplish, and the how can determine the success of the what." Saw this in the NYT. CoC came to mind.

Psychoanalysis lesson: Luxon exhibits two primitive defences: denies and projects (says Labour is bereft of ideas but really it's him) while the sign just lies: Fixing the Basics, Building the Future. How stupid you would have to be to believe that in September 2026 I cannot fathom.
Luxon stands in front of applauding National Party cronies and behind a sign reading Fixing the Basics. Caption says "Luxon warns Labour bereft of ideas"

When @graemeedgeler.bsky.social says you're "the worst Speaker I can recall" you know it's bad. Gerry Brownlee, Parliament's ineffectual policeman, wraps up chaotic term newsroom.co.nz/2026/09/24/g...
Brownlee is the worst Speaker I can recall. A single ruling during the committee stage of the fast-track law is sufficient for him to earn this title. A basic and long-standing rule in the House is that the admissibility of amendments in the Committee of the Whole is a decision for the Chair and that this will not be interfered with by the Speaker. The Chair ruled out National’s list of projects to add to the law. The Government asked for the Speaker to be recalled, and to get the government out of a jam, the Speaker intervened, undermining the Chair and decades of practice, just so the Government didn’t have to wait to use the Parliamentary options open to them. Completely unjustified and the worst Parliamentary action I can recall a Speaker taking.

Can’t believe NZ is heading into a Super El Niño with so many outdated fire engines in such appalling condition. Media scrutiny of the coalition government is so low that they can get away with not only causing crises as usual, but allowing highly predictable and preventable ones to happen. #nzpol
