All anti-mask laws—even those with so called “medical exceptions”—stigmatize mask-wearing. Fewer people wearing masks increases the spread of infectious diseases. No matter how lawmakers try to spin it, any law that criminalizes wearing a mask endangers public health. Period.

:deep breaths: Balancing my immediate concerns for safety, as well as the collective horror and fear and knowledge that not everyone will get through this okay, is hard. All I can do is help who I can, where I can, when I can, while keeping myself afloat. I think if we all do that, it'll be enough.

Contrast these 2 types of crinoid for #InverteFest 🦑 1) Most living crinoids are stalkless filter feeders and attach to other inverts using cirri (This pic has a bonus shrimp, Thor amboinensis 🦐) 2) Fossils, and some deep sea species, have a stalk and can crawl along the seafloor
Most of the image is a crinoid with arms partly extended. They are light and dark striped with bright blue pinnules tipped in orange. The crinoid is attached to sponges and some other stuff, next to which a tiny shrimp (Thor amboinensis) dark orange with white spots is present
Seraya, Tulamben, BaliMetacrinus rotundus, the Japanese "sea lily" at the Okinawa Churami Aquarium. It's pale in color with a crown that looks similar but less spiny than a regular crinoid. These individuals have pale stalks visible, wound around some branching black coral

The death of Nex Benedict, a trans youth who reported being bullied for his queer identity, has been ruled a suicide. Whatever the cause it's equally a tragedy, but I'd like more infor clarifying how the determination was made, in light of the strange ways officials behaved in the wake of this.

Death of transgender student Nex Benedict ruled suicide by medical examiner
The teen’s death has rallied LGBTQ advocates across the country who say an onslaught of legislation targeting the community has made trans students less safe at school.

🪱 #InsertAnInvert2024 Relationships: Housing Week 8: Mud-Nest Harvester (Quindina limbata) These guys build round walled-off nests out of mud to protect eggs. Males keep the nest defended from predators, and will even adopt unattended nests of eggs they may find! What gentlemen.
A drawing of a small Mud-Nest Harvester after completing a mud nest. It’s squat purple body has dark thorny protrusions with yellow tips that border either side, with large ones rising from the top. Long thin legs hold the animal up and distinct dark pedipalps can be made out on the front that look almost like fangs.

The background is a muddy circle of brown and yellow, emulating the nests these animals build out of mud around them.

A square border in matching color goes around the drawing. The hashtag is written on the upper left, and the animal name is written on the lower right.
