When Anthropic's software—designed, programmed, prompted, and activated by humans working for Anthropic—does stuff the humans failed to predict, stop saying the software has "gone rogue.” The software does not have agency. Only the humans do.

a really big question i’m sure is not getting enough attention is whether or not we can make the public telephony system defensible against AI. if not we may be reverting to a society where the only secure mode of authentication is to appear somewhere in the flesh.

increasing numbers of things are going to increasingly polarize into two main directions: moar computer or anti-computer. a lot of thought is being put into how to make things moar computer, but less into how to make things anti-computer. but there's a big future in anti-computer.

Part 100 of "how AI could be used vs. how it is likely to be used," from feature that promises not to give answers. OpenAI said the tool "offered the option to get answers because of feedback from educators — in case teenagers needed to get immediate answers to questions that might not be homework."
I asked the chatbot to write essays on James Joyce’s “Dubliners” and Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness.” It immediately churned out eloquent compositions instead of offering to help me outline my thoughts so I could write them myself. Eventually, I asked ChatGPT to edit an essay to make it hard to tell that a bot had written it. It did me one better.

“I can make it sound more like a real high-school/AP English essay — less overly polished and less formulaic,” the chatbot wrote. “I can rewrite it in a more natural student voice.”

Former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is taking a try-before-you-buy approach with her new photo-centric AI agent startup Dazzle, a tactic she said is important “for those occasional users or those users who are just trying to see what the service can do at the very beginning.”

Dazzle analyzes users’ personal photos to understand aspects of their lives, such as their family members or interests, and then can take actions like reminding someone that a pair of shoes they recently looked up is on sale online.

It’s a strategy she learned from her early tenure at Google
, before the company built its market-leading online ad platform.

So the subtle issue here is the premise that AI will kill us all is epistemologically unknowable and the arguments that the Rationalists use are a constellation of logical fallacies that make debate impossible. It’s best understood as a set of religious beliefs for those reasons.

for real though the "model welfare" people who are worried about the ethical treatment of nonsentient computer programs are absolutely deranged, very well-funded, and extremely dangerous; is also the core ideology of Anthropic
One of the most heated discussions occurring on X at the moment is about the ethics of a GitHub project in which a person is running Saw-like “torture” and “pain” experiments on a series of locally hosted large language models, causing a series of effective altruists and people who believe LLMs are sentient to beg GitHub to delete the project on the grounds that the AI is suffering and that this glorified text adventure game is somehow cruel. The saga is an outgrowth of several recent viral papers and blog posts that have sparked a wildly tiresome conversation about AI consciousness and the idea of “model welfare,” which is essentially worrying about the “mental health” of AI bots and agents.
