"By threatening us w the violent fantasies of an unsurveilled world, [Flock] is pushing something that strikes me as the antithesis of safety: a community ethic founded on suspicion, a closely monitored world with no exit,” writes @bradybricknerwood.bsky.social. www.newyorker.com/culture/infi...

The company, which has a hundred and thirty thousand cameras monitoring the streets of the U.S., frames privacy as a worthwhile trade-off for safety and security, echoing the language of the post-9/11...

this is actually what I see as the central challenge of AI: not encountering intelligences comparable to our own, but the development of toolmaking processes/approaches that are fundamentally different than the ones that have for so long defined us as a species... the weirdening of toolmaking

My review of Informatics of Domination is up on Catalyst's website. The book is fantastic and writing this was fun. When states and capital fail, we remain. Imagine that. @jsrhee.bsky.social @melodyjue.bsky.social @dukepress.bsky.social @dukepress.bsky.social catalystjournal.org/index.php/ca...

With the book’s release, I want to give a brief overview and outline a few of the key arguments. I’d include links to contemporary events but there are too many connections. The worst part of writing about race, computation, and police power is that it is always timely.

It's alive! I'll do a series of posts on the book soon. For now, my absolute deepest thanks to everyone who lit the way and walked with me on the 11-year trek to make this real. There is no need to fear or hope, but only to look for new weapons. @uminnpress.bsky.social @thenewschool.bsky.social

Next month marks the 60th anniversary of the JHU conference where Derrida delivered “Sign, Structure, and Play.” We’re taking the opportunity to revisit (and reopen?) the structuralism question with regard to AI. If you’re in the Triangle, come by!

R. Joshua Scannell's THE CARCERAL SURROUND confronts digital policing and power
Author R. Joshua Scannell breaks down his new book The Carceral Surround: what it is, why it matters, and what he hopes readers take away from it. Description: As law enforcement agencies deploy increasingly advanced technologies to suppress dissent, hunt migrants, and target marginalized communities, The Carceral Surround offers a powerful new theory of police and prison power in the digital age. Demonstrating that understanding digital policing requires confronting the political and racial logics that sustain police power, R. Joshua Scannell presents a rare hybrid of critique and refusal that imagines pathways for collective resistance.
