Anecdotally: I-5 being closed pushed some folks to transit, and this is a brilliant example of a) why we need to just demolish the inner eastside part of I-5 and b) why when we do that it will be just fine.

Blue Economy done wrong. Not surprised, in 2019 in MI at a GLC meeting, the then NOAA caretaker only talked about deep sea mining. PS mining stuff we’ll send to China anyway cuz we lack refineries. Ecologically hurtful, economically stupid.

Maybe we will finally wake up to the fact that “free speech“ and “viewpoint diversity” are actually bad in academia. What you want is peer-reviewed knowledge, not a debate-me-bro culture in which empirically discredited views get resources & funding & platforms just because.

What a great article not only on faculty workloads, but how little our salaries actually factor in to most university budgets. A few highlights. First, our salaries are falling:
Third, faculty salaries are falling even if we statistically control for faculty rank and institution. By our analysis of National Center for Education Statistics data, tenured and tenure-track salaries are down 10 percent in real terms since 2016 and are lower today than they were in 2002; nontenured faculty salaries are down 4 percent since 2016 and are at 2002 levels today.

To put this plainly: Suppose sharply increased teaching loads enabled institutions to cut one out of every seven full-time faculty. (That’s roughly what we saw last year in severe cuts announced at West Virginia, Western Illinois, and St. Cloud State Universities.) The associated savings in salary and benefits even through such drastic action would amount to less than 2.5 percent of total institutional expenditures for the typical university.

The upshot? If you think higher education has a cost problem, squeezing more teaching out of faculty is not the first place you should look.

Using PCEF for AC units saves lives. For Moda renovations? Not so much. Also can we possibly use PCEF funds to get AC installed in our public schools so people aren't trying to learn/teach in buildings that are 90+ degrees??

Tax the rich and corporations to pay for public services. Side note: If we’re gonna talk about how much preschool for all costs high earners in taxes, it’s pretty biased & incomplete to not mention what Portlanders save in child care costs. If Portland is unaffordable, P4A is one answer to that.

Demanding a transparent, public process where Portlanders know what they get for their money is not 'playing politics.' It's good governance and fiscal stewardship. It's deeply unserious to suggest that the only thing that matters is locking up seven votes on council, by locking the public out.
