As the California heatwave slowly fades, a fairly dramatic change in the pattern now appears increasingly likely over the coming weekend into next week. An early-season trough may "phase" with the remnants of Hurricane Rachel, drawing it more directly into SoCal. [Short thread]

Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]

Beige marks land and gray marks missing ocean values. The main colour scale spans -2 to +10°F, with white at zero. Hot pink marks anomalies above +10°F. On Boston marriage, 1894
BOSTON MARRIAGE

What the Scarcity of Men in Massachusetts Has Brought About

The funniest of all social developments is that which goes under the head of Boston marriages. Two women, as well known as Susan Channing and Edna D. Cheney, have made separate appeals for this new departure of female habit, and have defended it with considerable success.

A Boston marriage is described to be a sympathetic union of two women, who have not been able to make good and agreeable matches with members of the opposite sex. Miss Cheney is of the opinion that in our present state of civilization they seem to be necessary and should not be interfered with. Miss

--The Evening Herald, 21 Feb 1894Channing also believes that since in our present state of civilization marriage like wealth is getting to be more and more the privilege of the few, the women unsought in wedlock or unable to get the men of their choice should have the right to form sympathetic unions with each other.

What is to hinder a Boston couple from adopting a child or even more than one? Why not grow a household in this manner? The meanest thing about old-maid life is that it takes to cats, or parrots, or poodles -- generally cats. I see no reason why a cat shall not have a share of sympathy but it has no claim upon a love it cannot appreciate. Besides, cat-love is a dreadfulapology for baby-love. By all means let our Bostonese adopt children. In this way, while there is no increase of children, there will be a decrease of homeless children.

A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue and Green are standing side-by-side listening to a third fox, a golden yellow stranger.
Stranger: ...And five whole years later, our cleric was found within somebody's vacuum cleaner!

As the stranger continues chattering, Green leans subtly towards Blue, whispering to him.
Green: Do you have any idea who this is?
Blue: I thought you knew!
Green: I'm face blind! I have to bluff all the time!

I think our world has become more disconnected because of phones, but not just because of social media. With a phone in everyone’s hands there’s no need to ask for directions, or where to eat in town. No need to stop and help someone broken down on a highway. They have a phone; they’ll call someone.

Governor Abigail Spanberger quietly ended a rulemaking process initiated in the waning days of former-governor Glenn Youngkin's administration. The rule would have limited transgender students' ability to play sports and use facilities.
But Spanberger said over the weekend the rule is now dead.
Governor Abigail Spanberger told a crowd at Virginia Pridefest Saturday she was moved by the story of a transgender child and the issues their families face.
"And I tell you I burst into tears because of the fact that I want to make members of the
LGBTQ+ community know that you have a governor that values your community," Spanberger said from the Pridefest stage.

In fact, the odds of "more than trivial" amounts of rain in SoCal are now around 50%! And there is a real chance of genuinely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that could potentially cause flooding (~20-25%!). But there's also around a 20-25% chance of no rain at all.
Plot from weathermodels.com showing predicted precipitation for a point near LAX across the full ECMWF ensemble. 40-50% of members now suggest the potential for significant precipitation this weekend, though some remain completely dry and around 30% indicate only light showers.
