As I've gotten older - I've really internalized two things: 1. I don't need to give my opinion to everything I see/read/hear. (Both online and IRL). 2. It costs absolutley nothing to be nice. Following these two points, my quality of life has drastically increased.

It's always nice to be reminded that there are kind people out there. The kids mother was running the marathon on Saturday, and we stood on the sidelines with a banner to cheer her on. A stranger filmed the interaction and then sent us the video. It costs nothing to be nice 🙂.

This neon sign was supposeldy inspired the "Go West Cowboy" in Las Vegas. The advertisement in Leipzig was put under monument protection in 1993. You used to be able to send a paid text message to a number and the sign would light up for 3 minutes. Sadly that service was discontinued in 2025.

If you go through the main entrance of the S-Bahn Greifswalder Str. you might have noticed this "new" mural. It's a replica of Walter Womackas "Wenn Kommunisten träumen" (When communists dream) from 1976, and was originally displayed in the Palast der Republik.

A little thread about this church that we passed by in Rangsdorf, Brandenburg. The first fieldstone church was built here around the year 1400. After a fire damaged the church in 1695, a new church was built in 1699/1700. 1/12

NGL - even as someone who wasn't born in Berlin, I find it somewhat "weird" that NONE of this year's main candidates are actually from Berlin. Werner Grafs bavarian accent is especially jarring. Saying that - Kai Wegner is from Spandau and look what good he's done...

Super Idee 👍🏻 Muss aber sagen daß man aussehalb der großen Polnischen Städte nicht wirklich weit kommt. Man kann viel bei der DB bemängeln, aber man erreicht in DE fast jedes Kaff mit der Bahn. Und über die vielen ungesicherten Bahnübergänge in PL sollten wir lieber gar nicht erst reden 😬

Bin in W-Deutschland geboren, Familie hat aber davor in der VR Polen gelebt, und bin selbst bis kurz nach dem Mauerfall in der ČSSR groß geworden. Lebe seit 17 Jahren in Ost-Berlin. Bin ich ein Wessi? Geo-Ostdeutsch? Sozio-Ostdeutsch?

The demographic which voted the least for the AfD was socialized entirely in the GDR, the highest share at 53% (35-44) were children or infants when the wall came down and 42% of those born in the 21st century voted for them.

My main two general takeaways as a GDR historian on this election (which will probably be painfully familiar to anyone who has followed me for a while) 1. Equating the AfD with a residual mass authoritarian personality is an oversimplification that obscures effects of post-89 social collapse...
