I’ve worn a grubby RNLI cap for decades. I sound London, but I was born in Truro and I was a basically feral (Gen X) kid wandering the coast path with a dog until sunset for a lot of my early life. The lifeboats are in the fabric like trawlers and farms and pasties and fish and chips.

The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

Lifeboats are *built to be submerged*. Did you know that? They are constructed as surface vessels which *will* go under the surface; which *will* capsize. And they are built to come back up again and carry on.

Nice article on rewilding and the many ways it can work towards preventing fires and floods. Looks much more like a world I would like to inhabit, in particular the paragraphs below on revitalising and the role of wild animals. 🥰 rewildingeurope.com/news/rewildi...
For thousands of years, Europe’s landscapes were shaped by large herds of wild herbivores. Grazing, browsing and trampling created a constantly shifting mosaic of grassland, scrub and woodland that supported rich biodiversity, while limiting the build-up of vegetation that could fuel large, intense fires. Today, human impacts mean most of these natural grazers have disappeared, while rural depopulation and land abandonment have contributed to declining livestock numbers. With fewer animals grazing the land, dense vegetation has accumulated across millions of hectares, increasing the fuel available for wildfires.

Restoring natural grazing is not only about bringing back large herbivores such as European bison, wild horses and Tauros. It also means allowing common species such as red, roe and fallow deer, elk and ibex to recover to densities where their grazing and browsing can significantly shape vegetation. Across much of Europe, intensive hunting and forestry practices have suppressed herbivore populations, limiting this important ecological role. Restoring more abundant and diverse herbivore communities can reduce the build-up and continuity of combustible vegetation, creating more varied landscapes that can slow the spread and intensity of wildfire.
