this is insane at every level; the UK's determination to institutionally harass trans people is deeply evil.

The Earth is also terrible, and dark, and cruel. The rabbit shrieks dying in the green meadows. The mountains clench their great hands full of hidden fire. There are sharks in the sea, and there is cruelty in men’s eyes.

I think a very clear point has been Reform's embrace of basically wanting to do ICE that they just announced: an obviously counter-productive policy that's only going to alienate the voters that they need and is only popular with the most hardcore support they have. But it sounds cool on twitter.

I think ironically, the far-right cause has become even more internationalist in form than the left. Everyone is basically just cosplaying as USian fascists, in part because of where the money comes from, but also just because that's where the cultural weight seems to be.

Like a lot of things that the UK far-right is doing that are clearly tactically incorrect, this probably derives largely from US funding. Well, and also the stupider reason: that being that they're all still on twitter and are just parroting the omni-chud cause.

I think in the Maoist case it's something that relates to pretty specific social dynamics (stuff like having an actual peasantry in a state of low central authority with limited repressive apparatus outside of military occupation) and tends to not especially seem to work outside of that.

After a poultry plant shut down in July's heatwave, the UK's meat industry trade body called for processing sites to have "continuous access to water, irrespective of wider pressures on local supplies". When those sites use more water than Brighton, that matters. www.grilled.media/data-meat-in...

It is a weakness on the part of UK unionists that they don’t ever seem to argue with actually existing nationalism, but with their own imagined fantasy of what it must be. They don’t seem to ever actually respond to the discourse in real pro-Indy culture, and i cant imagine it helps them.

The evil AI copied itself onto the internet! No stoping it now! That's just Skynet or Ultron. Those stories rely on magic, and the audience suspends disbelief because the plot is cool. Makes no sense for AI that needs giant datacenters or live connections to them. Can we deal with reality, please?

It began like any traditional wedding in southern Iran.
The women arrived with their hands elaborately decorated with henna. Children played in the courtyard. A festive meal was about to be served in a room draped with carpets and pillows.
It ended when a bomb brought down the roof, turning a night of celebration into a jumble of dust-coated sandals, torn garlands and blood-soaked rugs.
Dozens of guests, according to a witness and accounts in local news media, had already arrived at the Malahi family's home and surrounding buildings in the southern city of Kuhestak to celebrate a young bride and groom.
Around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the wedding was struck by a bomb that, according to a weapons expert and a visual analysis by The New York Times, had been released by American forces as they carried out intense attacks in southern Iran. At least five wedding guests were killed, including a 6-year-old boy, and at least 67 other people were wounded, according to Iran's Red Crescent Society, a humanitarian aid group.
Among the guests was a woman named Motahareh, whose identity was verified by The Times. The night of the wedding, she posted a selfie on Instagram from the women's henna party the night before - beaming in perfectly applied makeup, a lilac head scarf and flowery robe.
"Last night was the first night!" she wrote. "For the coming nights, should I make these sorts of stories for you or what!!!"

Like Americans are complaining about "CanCon" in the same way that free traders complain about state subsidies being unfair to the free market. That's really all it is. There's sort of an implication that other cultures are just illegitimate in some way...

In the face of globalised culture, it's kinda important for countries that actually do want to preserve some of their cultural distinctness to have some protections or funding for them, and in light of superpowers making efforts to undermine neighbouring cultures even more so.

The issue is that the americans basically don’t have speed cameras. So it’s all just down to the personal enforcement of a cop. Every argument against speed tickets that isn’t just selfishness sorta just comes down to that. Obviously the answer isn’t to just get rid of them.

I really despise how many mechanical elements from DnD are just baked into how people view modern fantasy. The idea that say class is actually just a shorthand and a game mechanic and doesn't exist diagetically any more than hit points do is just such a depressing lens to view the genre through.

Alex Mann @alex-mann.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
DnD was once intended to be a system for playing the classic heroic fantasy of the 60/70s, so the media it produced like Dragonlance is still in that mould. LitRpg stuff is basically trying to write the story of an actual play podcast that doesn't exist.

Alex Mann @alex-mann.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
DnD as a literary movement has always served as a creative lobotomy for the fantasy genre, but at least the examples of it in the past did once attempt to model themselves after original fantasy works. Now they are all just copies of copies, and they get worse with every new "success."

A lot of left wingers tend to basically just resort to placing their generic reading of geopolitics over it all where of course, the wicked euro jews must be the problem, and of course the middle eastern jews are totally just about to find their kinship with the Palestinians. It's politics by meme.

I think whenever you try and categorise genre in political terms so tightly it tends to be total bullshit. It's really just an exercise in academic brain rot, where the opinions and tastes that make up your personal universe must be outwardly universalised.
