Paris has transformed more than 300 streets outside schools into pedestrian-only “garden streets,” replacing traffic and parking with trees, benches and light-coloured paving. Researchers found the redesigned streets were on average 5°C cooler than nearby roads during summer heat. The projects […]

RE: fediscience.org/@petersuber/1164713… It's why I keep arguing for banning the use of "AI" for submissions in manuscripts/grants/applications/any writing whenever I can – and plead for people to please submit their own writing without "AI polishing" where I can't. I'd much […]

It's fun how, even as a pretty senior person, you end up in research projects with PhD candidates or postdocs who assume you an expert while you panicky try to read up on what you are working on and at least understand the basics enough to be able to follow and usefully contribute. In other […]

When someone says „Scientists do not want you to know“ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

Don't anthropomorphize LLMs, language is important. Say "the bot generated some text" not "the AI replied". Use "this document contains machine-generated text" not "this work is AI-assisted". See how people squirm when you call their slop out this way.

Early career researchers tend to think that an editor's rejection (or a revision request they can't accommodate), means they have to give up and submit elsewhere. In my experience, explaining your side to the editor (in a polite and reasonable tone) can sometimes make them reconsider. It's often […]

I think the most masterful writing seems simple and plain-spoken, but still manages to use interesting, obscure words, whilst always neatly framing these oddballs in a little tableau with other words so the meaning is perfectly clear. This is kind of the opposite of how most jargon are applied […]

I need to prepare a 3-hour tutorial, which has to be ready by the end of next week. Therefore, I’ve spent about two hours selecting the best colour scheme for the terminal. Am I doing this right? #higerEd #academicChatter #teaching

I'm preparing a list of #MachineLearning papers with subtle and not-so-subtle errors (e.g., data leakage, non-independent training/testing set, lack of both internal and external validation, ...) to share with students. Does anyone have any favourite of their to share? Any must have? #ml #ai […]
