@sundogplanets AI is terrible for citations. Citations are a huge part of my job (I edit at a journal). All of us journal people are trying to send up the alarm about how much AI screws up citations, and no one is listening. If you ask AI to format your citations it will mess up all your DOIs […]

A vertical landscape photograph shows a large, jagged mountain rising above a coastal scene with small buildings and water. The sky is filled with white and gray clouds behind the green-and-brown mountain peaks. Below the mountains, rolling hills include a bright red building with white trim and a light-colored house near a wooden pier extending into the water. In the dark blue water of the foreground, circular floating structures are visible alongside small red buoys. Green foliage frames the lower left and right edges of the image.

What's most upsetting me as a journal editor is that many papers we receive where AI use is disclosed for editing and language refinement actually appear to have been ruined rather than improved by AI. We get what seem like promising underpinning studies, but totally obscured by over-complex text.

Three panels from the classic comic "Prisoners of the Sun" (1949), where Tintin and captain Haddock are held prisoners by the Incas, and use the prediction of a solar eclipse to be freed. The talk bubbles have been edited to spoof the "captain it's Wednesday" meme.

First panel shows the captain saying "What a week, huh?"
Second panel shows a partial solar eclipse.
Third panel shows Tintin saying "Captain, it's the eclipse!"
