After a short break, let’s return to the connection between #climatechange and #mentalhealh, focusing on the impact of extreme events such as #floods and #heatwaves Extreme events are, thankfully, rare, but their effects can last a long time. They can increase […] [Original post on mstdn.science]
Slide with a magenta background and a black text. The title reads "What is an extreme event?", followed by: "An extreme event should be rare. For example, during heatwaves, temperatures above the 90th percentile are considered extreme. This means that if 30°C was exceeded on fewer than 90 days in the previous 30 years, it is considered extreme". In the bottom, a pictogram show a 6x6 square, with 3 black small squares, representing temperatures above 30°C and 33 white ones, representing temperatures below 30°C. An arrow in the bottom right suggests to move to the next image. Slide with a magenta background and a black text. The title reads "Some data", followed by: "Scientific evidence shows a significant prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among populations affected by floods or wildfires. Floods are also associated to higher risk of depression and anxiety". In the bottom, it reads "Prevalence of PTSD following extreme events" with two pictograms showing one a burning tree with a donut plot at 26% (also written in the image), and the another pictogram flooded house with a donut plot at 29% (also written in the image).
