It looks like I might have to stop reading r/emacs even before the RSSageddon in November: the Reddit website sometimes shows me a popup blocking my view of a thread, asking me to install the app, which I haven't been able to dismiss. 🤷

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

The recent Jane Wickline sketch on SNL making fun of Dario Amodei had three jokes with basically the same punchline, but unusually for me, I did not mind the repetition at all! And I cannot decide which version I like best, so maybe leaving them all in was the best plan: 1."I may have been […]

I want to get back to using albums as the unit of music I listen to. I listened to albums when I was young, so I also worry this desire is a boring-ass version of a midlife crisis.

TIL that there are prestigious awards for birds! While I disagree birds need awards, prestigious or not, if we have to have them, I agree this little guy should get one of the prestigious ones.

A new risk for mathematicians: a colleague reports that immediately after they posted an abstract of their upcoming talk online, a
student elsewhere used Al to derive proofs of the stated results and then posted it on the arxiv.

My colleague hadn't posted to arxiv yet.

Recent events suggest that one should not discuss mathematical research in progress with a chatbot lest you run the risk of being scooped by the chatbot company. But I don’t see people talking about the complementary risk that the chatbot company does not scoop you! One’s ego might never recover.

Anthropic’s ‘Watermark’ Text Adulteration in Claude Is a Perversion of Writing
It’s unacceptable for a tool to sacrifice an iota of clarity, coherence, meaning, quality, etc. for the purpose of embedding hidden clues within the text to suggest its provenance. The idea that anything other than *my* needs should factor into the generation of text *for me* is patently offensive.
