On the way down to the Moon's surface, there was a problem: there were more programs running than the computer was designed to handle. It handled the situation gracefully till the problem was resolved. That's good programming. Her work is why Apollo 11 isn't remembered as a tragedy. 💁🏻‍♀️

Sometimes I wonder whether the timeline that got Elder Scrolls VI (and probably VII by now) would be envious of this timeline that got the MMO.

The perfect way to put it. They found a way to worm a subscription between you and your normal work.
A screenshot of a post on Threads by Joe Hill. The post reads: "Here’s a thought about the purveyors of AI. They aren’t selling assistance—they’re selling dependency. You give up on acquiring one skill after another, give up on the knotty, meaningful struggle to acquire those skills and AI takes over. It isn’t freeing up time so you can make more of yourself. It’s encouraging cognitive surrender so you can be less."

Even if AI worked exactly as advertised, and were done ethically and efficiently, I would still be against it. AI brings detachment to something that requires intimacy. It doesn't want anything; it seeks but has no goal. It imitates words but has nothing to say. Art is human; AI is inhuman.

This also applies to worldbuilding, political design. If you don't understand some process, you may think it just magically happens offscreen, but in fact it takes skilled, effortful work. 💁🏻‍♀️ You're not being asked to understand or master them, just respect them, not use the Handwave Machine.

[TW: racial slurs in capped post] If someone like that refuses to vote Republican, he'll have the same voting intent, and effect on electoral outcomes, as Leftists who refuse to vote Democratic. Any number multiplied by zero equals zero. Love without results is equivalent to hate without results.

Dunno whose description is slightly too long, but until Bluesky's vibecoding happens to hallucinate its way by chance into something that fails more gracefully, it'd be nice if you pare it down just a bit. 🥴
Part of the Notifications page in Bluesky's web interface. It should show All notifications, but instead it shows an error message: "Invalid response payload: grapheme too big (maximum 256, got 257) at $.notifications[5].author.description" which prevents anything else from being shown.

#ForestFriday? Why, I can't think of having been outdoors anywhere recently...🤔 The upper part of the Umpqua River's watershed, and of course the high forest around Mount Thielsen, #Oregon. #Hiking #Nature #Trees #Pine #Forest #Lake #Umpqua #Mist #ECK #Scape #Landscape #📷
A photo of a rough brown footpath with stones visible scattered around. The path looks as though it may have been a rough jeep track a long time ago.
At the bottom of the image on the left and right of the path are small green ground cover shrubs crowding the forest floor, with some small native rhododendron, not in bloom, standing taller on the left.
Bordering the path as it rises through the upper part of the image are tall pines that create a canopy of green boughs up high. Lower on the tree trunks and on most lower branches are drapings of pale bright green lichen, lighter than the pine needles. The tree trunks are shades of grey and dark brown barks.
The path curves away to the left and out of sight through the tall trees.
The sky overhead through the tree tops is an overcast hazy grey.A photo of a small lake whose surface is sprinkled with countless little ripple circles from raindrops. It's surface reflects upside down, the dark shapes of tall trees across the water on a large hump of land above the water. The shore line looks stony with an even band of green and pale yellow topped early Fall grasses. Above the shoreline is a steep bare slope with a few small trees on it's left, and two larger ones to the right. Further up to where the rounded top should be there are enough tall skinny trees to block the landscape. All the trees have many green pine needle covered branches. The smaller trees being denser and more green than the tallest ones.
On the pond in the foreground there are some yellow/green patches of algae floating here and there, but not enough to block the reflection of the trees and the sky.
The sky is a featureless dim grey befitting the rain.A photo of a path between tall pine trees with many green needle covered branches, and reaching into a bright pale blue sky. The tree trunks are all nearly silhouetted by being shaded from a rising bright Sun that can be seen as a brilliant yellow ball at the very upper left corner shining through some dew covered tree branches. Nearly all the tree branches are backlit green by the rising Sun strongly so that they are in strong contrast to the shaded dark tree trunks.
Ahead in the gap between the trees where a path passes, a bright cloud of rising mist shines in the early daylight.A bright daylight photo of a row of tall slender pine trees grow in a descending row down a steep tan incline that is exposed in the Sun with no plants growing on it.
The incline the trees grow from starts at middle left, and descends to the lower right corner. The trees almost appear to be in lock step with each other in a somewhat orderly row, and nearly all of them are bent at their bases in a "J" shape to allow them to grow straight up from the steep slope. The tree trunks are strongly contrasted by more of the tan barren incline in Sun visible through them.
All their lower trunks are bare of most limbs for about three feet up, indicating the depth of Winter snows. The rest of the rising branches are dense with green pine needles that catch the Sun on their right sides, while the branches on the left are shaded.
Directly under the row of trees is their shadow following their line up the hill.
The sky seen through the trees and solidly above them is a rich blue.
A lone jet contrail cloud by chance almost has the same angle as the tan steep slope below, and cuts behind some of the taller trees in the row.

That, and a map of trans rights in the US is basically just a map of where Democrats have control. That's a real, tangible difference that Republicans hate. If "both parties are the same", then how would this change if they became different? This is why I have zero patience for both-siders.

Vibe coding replaces the interesting bit - writing code to solve a problem - and replaces it with the boring bit - reviewing someone else's code to see if they've done it right. It's a shit swap.

Being bi can be awkward sometimes: straight people think you're gay, gay people think you're straight, you only matter as part of a broader collective whole but rarely in your own right. It's like being gay twice. At least we have the best flag!

I loathe scalpers in any industry. When you intentionally try to make a product rare so you can drive prices up, you're a fucking vampire. Pokemon should be just as accessible to a kid walking into a store with his birthday money as to a private collector with an adult's income. This delights me.

I'm gonna break rank here: I'm not a fan of the process either. It can be fun sometimes when it goes well, but that's because it's going well. I'm not a fan of work: I'm a fan of results. AI can produce old results 💁🏻‍♀️ but can't produce new results. So it doesn't matter how much work it saves.

A map of US states where trans rights are protected is just a map of US states where Democrats are in control. But saying that doesn’t keep people terrified and paying for newsletter subscriptions to learn more, so certain influencers have to lie about it.

💚 Your artist and designer friends probably aren't as full of themselves as you think.

Please remember: they share their work and accomplishments all the time as a matter of survival. No one else will be their hype man.

That grant? It's the only thing keeping them going during these slow months.

This flashy opportunity? They have been trying to make it happen for a year with only hope to keep them going and it's finally happening!

That exhibit? It's the only one they got into out of the 15 they submitted for.

That new painting they posted? They kinda need it to sell so they can pay the rent next month.

So be kind in your thoughts. Imagine if your job required social media presence on four platforms to make sure ends meet.

And if you see your friends or acquaintances post art that you like, please share it! It can make all the difference sometimes.

💚

Tobin Harbor is located on the northeast end of Isle Royale, near Rock Harbor. In the early 20th century, it was a popular summer haven for vacationers. Visitors today enjoy the peaceful paddling and boating opportunities it offers. The webcam is active only during the summer months when power is available to it (typically from the beginning of May until late September).

Link is so named because he's the link, the connection, between the player and the game world. Many games from that era did that; Doomguy for example doesn't have a defined name/backstory because he's YOU! When did they ever do that with female characters though? 🤔 (Metroid? Was a secret though.)
