The moment of panic when you realize that decades of code is written based on an assumption of how a base library works, but that assumption isn't anywhere in the documentation. I guess the best I can do is add it to our regression tests to trip if their library update changes things

For a week I've been wondering who benefits or not in a situation where someone buys resale tickets to a show at over face value, then decides to sell tickets less than they paid (maybe an artist gets sociopolitical issues and handles it poorly) and then the whole event gets cancelled for weather.

Listen: I don’t want to minimize the danger of high e-bike speeds. But if the problem here is that stores sell e-bikes that can drive faster than legal limits, then where’s the story about how literally *every car dealership has been doing the same thing for decades*?!?

Hidden cameras show some stores unlocking speed limits on e-bikes, selling e-scooters that go up to 120 km/h | CBC News
A new hidden camera investigation by Marketplace shows how some stores are selling e-scooters and e-bikes with top speeds much higher than provincial speed limits and with recommended rider ages young...

Even hotter take: the fact that ebikes let teens in the suburbs suddenly have freedom to move around the public realm unsupervised is precisely why many older people are trying to ban them (using safety as a pretext)

I'm always wondering why people prefer slack/teams over email. Categorization is worse (no folders/tags) threading is worse. (more threads are by author, not subject) The immediacy breaks concentration. But this is one flaw in email that messaging fixes

I've long viewed it as: hardware engineers work towards miniaturization, software keeps expanding to fill available space and any optimization was done to fit within hardware constraints. The proliferation of data centers is a symptom of just adding hardware to the problem

An engineering student, especially a civil engineering student, really *should* get a working knowledge of history and urban sociology. The things we design serve the public, we should be able to conceptualize their effects on it.

But what struck me is that means the Times was founded 25 years *after* the black press which will celebrate its 200th birthday in a few months

The key thing here is *certain* trips. You don't have to suddenly go car-free! But even replacing a handful of weekly car trips with a bike can lead to savings. Car dependency is a systemic problem, but at the same time, many people are in a position to make changes like this.
