Murder by the state is still murder. Botching it tortures the victim. Like war, murder by the state shows that killing is acceptable as long as you're killing who the state wants killed.

I think that academia has not absorbed the fact that AI agents are now good enough to independently reconstruct complex papers without access to code or the papers themselves; just the methods & data. They aren’t perfect but the errors are often in the human paper, not the AI making a mistake.

There’s a species of shark called the ninja lanternshark. It glows in the dark, like all lantern sharks. It’s called ninja because the scientist who discovered it was explaining her discovery to family at Thanksgiving and then her young cousin shouted “ninjas are cool, call it the ninja shark!”

Ross Douthat is unsettled. The "left-of-center" "elite consensus" of the Obama era he hated is gone (yay!) and replaced by a right-wing populism he dreamed of (YAY!) but he can see it going bad (oh no) so instead of opposing it or reconsidering how bad the Obama era was, he's confused. Cue dril 2/x
The columnist’s job contains multitudes, but it’s useful to have a primary antagonist, a specific worldview that you think needs to be challenged and critiqued. For me, for many years, that worldview was the elite consensus of the early Obama era — a mostly left-of-center perspective that also belonged to Silicon Valley moguls, centrist politicians in the style of Michael Bloomberg and portions of the Republican consultant class. But watching this crisis unfold, I find that I’ve lost my sense of which contemporary worldview is most in need of criticism or opposition, where the good guys and bad guys are. Each major faction seems potentially dangerous, tempted toward the dark side in some unique way, contested or cross-pressured to a degree that makes me uncertain where the side of the angels really lies.Dril: the wise man bowed his head solemnly and spoke: "theres actually zero difference between good & bad things. you imbecile. you fucking moron"
