How do #learning processes related to reward exploitation and exploration interact with one another in the brain? This study uses behavior, neuroimaging, pharmacology, and modeling to reveal shared learning mechanisms, connecting with individual traits and experiences 🧪#AcademicSky plos.io/4fDkj27
Relationship between reward-learning interference and exploration-associated neural responses. The images show brain models on the left with regions of differential activity highlighted. Graphs on the right show significant correlations between neural activity patterns and behavior.

Using general linear model (GLM) 2 (see Materials and methods), dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) exhibited significant activations during exploration (contrast “Exploration> Exploitation”). Activated clusters were corrected for multiple comparisons at the whole-brain level (cluster-forming threshold of p < 0.001, and a cluster-level familywise error rate of p < 0.05). The color bar shows SPM-derived t scores. See S5 Table for details. Based on GLM3 (see Materials and methods), the BOLD signal extracted from the suprathreshold dmPFC clusters significantly covaried with the reduction in correct rates in reward-learning interference (RLINT) vs. reward-learning control (RLCON) trials.

Revised-TLDR: Using the hidden multivariate pattern method we show how we capture 5 (!) recurrent EEG topographies in participants' decisions. We show how these events parse the single-trial reaction time into: - sensory processes - attention orientation - evidence accumulation - motor execution
Results from the HMP estimation on the EEG of participants. The plot shows 5 successive events from stimulus onset to response. The events are represented as topographies at their average time of occurrence in the stimulus response interval.
