If I recall correctly, Gabe Newell argued that if you make it easy to buy, you reduce the incentive to pirate. The logic worked for Netflix, Kindle, Sony etc. But now the licenses are so hostile to customers, the platforms stalk you, and everything has ads or additional fees, piracy is easier again.

I think so. Some of the early books I read were old school stories set in UK boarding schools. Each story was distinct but the characters built over time. It worked for kids so no reason it couldn’t be refined to be an effective mechanism for an adult story too.
