People are falling for the DSA vs Establishment trap again. Didn’t we learn our lesson in 2016 and 2024? It’s the establishment’s job to build a coalition that can win EVERYWHERE. In some places, that means ultra-progressive. In others, it means establishment. The tent is big enough for all of us.

Three times this month, US officials said they need new nuclear weapons that a normal person would use—"that are cost-benefit rational to a normal person", "that common sense indicates you could actually use." Not sure which president they're referring to, but they doth protest a bit much.

AOC: Millennials are not punk kids anymore. We're grown adults with mortgages and kids, and that generation is starting to be decisive at the polls. And there is anger at being ignored, having our economic futures mortgaged by the generations that came before us and we're taking the reins

I concluded: "In many ways, the United States is still the country that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Until we admit the facts of what we did, until we atone for our actions, and until we act to ensure that we would never do such a thing again, that is who we are choosing to be."

The magazine excised this argument, but I have thought about it often since the piece was published.
"We are a country that desperately wants to believe that it is, as President Biden says, “the leading force for good in the world.” We are also a country that is gradually falling to fascism, which thrives on a myth of national infallibility, triumphal militarism, and the glorification of violence. We cannot reverse fascism with a single statement that we were wrong, but we cannot do it without admitting to ourselves that we can be wrong."

“Any political leader who would suggest today that the use of weapons of mass destruction against a civilian population would “save lives” because it would compel a surrender would be understood to be advocating war crimes.“ The logic was wrong then and it is wrong now.

Why it matters: when the paper of record calls your existence a debate, that framing doesn't stay on the page. Republican officials, judges, Supreme Court justices, and anti-trans groups have all cited the Times to justify stripping trans rights. The coverage by the paper of record matters.

It wasn't just framing. It was who got to speak. As coverage turned, trans voices in the stories dropped sharply while opponents of trans rights rose. By 2026, opponents were quoted more often than trans people themselves. Trans people were spoken about, not to.

Black text on white page that reads as follows:

On June 19, 1865, African American communities in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom from slavery — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect.

For 161 years, Juneteenth has been a day of remembrance for the freedom that was delayed. It is also a celebration of the joy and resilience that flourished despite that delay.

The contributions of African Americans, whose struggle for freedom shaped our nation, are immeasurable. Yet too many Black families continue to bear the brunt of an affordability crisis that has pushed them out of the neighborhoods and communities they've built.

True freedom has a tangible impact on daily life: the ability to afford housing, earn a living wage, put food on the table, support a family, and create a future for generations to come.

As we celebrate today, we must recommit ourselves to ensuring this freedom is fully realized.

Happy Juneteenth, New York City.

If you want to understand what the US is doing to Cuba right now as a result of the complete energy blockade since the beginning of the year. apnews.com/article/cuba...
The survival rate for children with cancer has fallen to 65% from 85% before the energy restrictions began in January, according to the report released by Cubadebate. It also said 100,000 children younger than 7 are no longer receiving the daily liter of milk previously provided by the state and that the country’s 16-vaccine immunization program for infants is “at risk.”

Additionally, it said, another 100,000 Cubans are on waiting lists for surgery and the treatment schedules of nearly 3,000 patients requiring kidney dialysis have been disrupted. Regarding medication, 300 of the 395 essential medicines produced on the island are unavailable due to a lack of chemical components required to manufacture medications.

Read this whole piece.
Mamuka spent 119 days in detention, about four months, but under normal circumstances, he should have been released. He was arrested on February 5 in Alabama, where he was detained for five days, then moved to Winn where he spent another 114 days before dying in custody. Unless something changed between the middle of March and early June, he did not have a final removal order so ICE couldn't move him-instead, Mamuka had a case pending before an immigration judge this entire time, and may have still been waiting on a final hearing when he passed. He was classified as the lowest risk level in detention, he had no mandatory detention flag, he was not a known terrorist or a suspected gang member (problematic as those categories are, and he never had a prior detainer, so it's unlikely that he ever had a run-in with police. All of these factors, combined with the nature of his arrest, support a straightforward conclusion that he should not have been in detention in the first place. Using the national ICE detention average daily rate of $150, the US taxpayer spent $17,850 detaining this single person without any evidence that it served the interests of public safety or national security.

“study of around 8,000 respondents concludes that women’s lower uptake of generative AI tools has little to do w/ skills or access. Instead, it is driven largely by how women perceive the broader societal risks associated w/ the new technology.”🧪 @josiecox.bsky.social
“…women are significantly more likely than men to worry about the wider consequences of generative AI, including its effects on employment, privacy, misinformation, mental health, and even the environment.

The researchers concluded that women's hesitation is less about fear of personal safety, and more about a concern for Al's broader societal and ethical
consequences.

One of the study's most striking findings is that the gap persists even among young, highly educated, and digitally confident users. In other words, women who are perfectly capable of using tools like ChatGPT-and who already engage heavily with technology-remain more hesitant. That hesitation appears to be less about fear of the tools themselves…”
