A small but mighty exhibition—“Costume as Art”—is on at the Met now. Fashion has always been Art, as @aimeehindsscott.bsky.social has long argued. And I finally got to see the famous Eupheme dress from Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall/Winter 2019–20 Alta Moda collection. 🌟 www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/...

🚨New Series Alert! 🚨 Series editors Louise Blanke and Anja Slawisch and I are excited to launch Edinburgh Studies in Classical Archaeology, which is seeking proposals for new books! All the deets: edinburghuniversitypress.com/series-edinb... @edinburghup.bsky.social @hcaatedinburgh.bsky.social
Screenshot of a webpage titled Edinburgh Studies in Classical Archaeology, series edited by Louise Blanke and Anja Slawisch. The tagline reads: Original and innovative research anchored in the material culture of the Classical past. The main paragraph reads: This series serves as a leading hub for Classical Archaeology, broadly conceived, bridging traditional material studies and new developments in the wider field. It welcomes research on material culture across a wide geographical range—from the British Isles to North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean—and spanning the Iron Age through the end of the long Late Antiquity (c. 1000 BCE–1000 CE). The series publishes monographs and edited volumes that explore regions, settlements, and objects in context. Contributions employ state-of-the-art methodologies to investigate previously underexamined sites, regions, and materials, or to reframe well-known evidence through innovative approaches. By integrating specialist expertise from adjacent fields—including ancient history, philology, epigraphy, archaeobotany, archaeometry, and digital heritage—the series promotes a holistic understanding of ancient societies and their interaction with their environments. Individual volumes are richly illustrated with photographs, maps, and technical drawings, establishing the series as a key resource for future research.

I have not seen (or read) In the Hand of Dante (yet) but I'm happy to see Gemma Donati included among the characters. The Gemma erasure is real - also (thanks Pre-Raphaelites i guess) so many people think Beatrice is Lisa Simpson to Dante's Ralph Wiggum

The Simpsons: Ralph Wiggum's Heart Breaks
Alt: The Simpsons: Ralph Wiggum's Heart Breaks. Ralph is a small yellow boy with a bowl cut wearing a grey suit and red bow tie, and Lisa is a small yellow girl with spiky hair in a purple dress with a purple bow in her hair. They are sitting in seats in a theatre. Lisa snarls at Ralph before turning away angrily. Ralph clutches his chest and grimaces. The scene is playing on a tv set. A hand is visible pressing a remote to replay the scene. The caption reads 'You can actually pinpoint the second when his heart rips in half'

Just learned about this game -- you're given 10 artifacts / day (from The Met's collection) and have to guess where they were made and when. 🏺🧪 And it's hard! I only got top 35%, which is kinda sad as an archaeologist & author of our Astonishing Artifacts column @livescience.com. anthropeum.com

A lot of attention is paid to craft traditions in Western Europe and North America, such as handsewn Hermes leather goods and bespoke Savile Row suits. But the uneven focus leads some to believe that things made outside of these places are low quality. This is not true. 🧵
