NBC News poll

Voters hold negative views of Al. In fact, the only topics less popular in the survey were the Democratic Party and Iran.

After becoming a congressional leader, a politician’s stock portfolio beats out those of peers by 47 (!!!) percentage points a year through trades timed around bills and firms that later get government contracts www.nber.org/papers/w34524 via @florianederer.bsky.social

WORKING PAPER 34524
DOI 10.3386/w34524
ISSUE DATE November 2025
Using transaction-level data on US congressional stock trades, we find that lawmakers who later ascend to leadership positions perform similarly to matched peers beforehand but outperform them by 47 percentage points annually after ascension. Leaders' superior performance arises through two mechanisms. The political influence channel is reflected in higher returns when their party controls the chamber, sales of stocks preceding regulatory actions, and purchase of stocks whose firms receiving more government contracts and favorable party support on bills. The corporate access channel is reflected in stock trades that predict subsequent corporate news and greater returns on donor-owned or home-state firms.令

Today I am thankful for the SPPQ editorial team! I created a simulated social media environment in Qualtrics and found that individuals’ political attitudes can change based on state legislators’ social media posts. A dissertation chapter and the most fun I’ve had working in a project so far.

This Election Day may seem unimportant because there are no “big” offices on the ballot but many states hold their nonpartisan municipal elections in off years. Races for city council, school boards, county judgeships are VITALLY important to the day to day functions of your community! Participate!

The most frustrating thing about Harris’s alleged gaffe on trans prisoners is that almost no one bothered to defend it on the merits. But the policy is fine: When the state provides healthcare it should also provide transition care!
She responded yes, adding that "it is important that transgender individuals who rely on the state for care receive the treatment they need, which includes access to treatment associated with gender transition."
She noted that as the California state attorney general, she backed the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation decision to provide gender transition surgery to state inmates.
In 2015, while Harris was the attorney general, California and the Transgender Law Center reached a historic settlement to move a
transgender woman inmate to a women's correctional facility and provide her with transgender medical care that had been deemed medically necessary by several medical and mental health clinicians,
according to the settlement agreement.
