Hippocampal representations of alternative possibilities are flexibly generated to meet cognitive demands
Comrie et al. show that the hippocampus flexibly represents different alternative possibilities—including paths ahead, behind, and far away—to meet distinct cognitive demands related to decision-making and learning. Their results demonstrate that the brain can selectively sample possibilities relevant to current needs.

Why put visual information there? Because movement rarely enters that part of neural state space. By constraining movement to a low-dimensional manifold, the circuit effectively creates another coding space where sensory information can be represented with less interference from movement.
