another friend birthday portrait! [OC: Sir Orren played by @aghdom.eu - CoS, 5e homebrew]
A digital painting in the style of an old oil portrait depicting a bearded old man in armour. He sits in a darkened space with a sad expression. The armour is tarnished in tones of green and he has his long gray hair in a bun. The frame around the painting is oval and the space around is decorated with drawing of roots creeping to the centre.

🧵 We tend to think the internet is permanent, but VANISHING CULTURE—the new 📚 from Internet Archive—starts with a simple reality: our digital record is far more fragile than we think 🕳️ 📖 Read for free: archive.org/details/vani... 🛒 Purchase in print: www.betterworldbooks.com/product/deta... ⬇️
Book cover titled “Vanishing Culture” on a teal background. Pixel-art style graphics show a VHS tape, open book, film reel, chain link, and vinyl record dissolving into digital fragments. At the bottom, a cursor icon points to the word “SAVE,” alongside an archive-style building icon, evoking digital preservation.

“Just make it exist!” Isn’t that simple, and neither is “making it good.” I know the left hand graphic has been making the rounds and is meant as motivation, but as a frequent victim of Scope Creep, please learn from my mistakes 😂🥲

I'm so glad this was my first attempt, so I can just let it go & not become addicted to this game again 😅 --- I just scored 63,888 on a game of at://2048. Think you can do better? Join in on the fun with @2048.blue.

I need to get back to the NOVA card game. @nightjargames.bsky.social made some really cool mockups and I just need to finish the dang thing.
Card from a game featuring a soldier colored in red on a dark background. White font shows a shield, the word minion, and the number two. Card from a game featuring a person casting a spell surrounded by green stone pillars. White font reads the words moon altar, shield symbol, and description of the card's effect.

When I was in Ireland, the museum was free but they had this thing you could tap (credit card or presumably phone/watch) & auto donate 5 Euro. Was thinking - it would be nice if there was a similar thing for artists to use at events?

Thinking about "text using propaganda register of x to convey anti-x ideas" generally. I do find that disclaimers of various kinds (which includes "looming context") aesthetically dissatisfying ... Often necessary, and I used them myself all the time. But they puncture the LARP-y conceit. 1/

Have you read the paper that introduced the "Turing test"? You know, by Alan Turing. One of the great minds of computing? No? It's… distressingly bad. Hilariously, mind-numbingly, hair-pullingly bad. One of the most widely circulated ideas of our field is, in fact, a total face-plant.

I know this has been talked about, but they’re rolling out the ‘edit image with grok’ thing for mobile users on Twitter(the option came up on my iPad). More randos can play with any artwork you upload. I know some artist friends still use the site, so be careful out there!

"The forest and the desert" is such a beautiful metaphor for how organizations craft software. I love the emphasis on community. The idea that conversations are everywhere when a team works in a forest, and that the path out of the desert also begins by having conversations with your peers.

Companies break promises all the time. A self-guaranteeing promise does not require you to trust anyone. Full essay: stephango.com/self-guarantee
Companies break promises all the time. A self-guaranteeing promise does not require you to trust anyone. You can verify a self-guaranteeing promise yourself.

File over app is a self-guaranteeing promise. If files are in your control, in an open format, you can use those files in another app at any time. Not an export. The exact same files. It’s good practice to test this with any self-proclaimed file-over-app app you use.

Terms and policies are not self-guaranteeing. A company may promise the privacy of your data, but those policies can change at any time. Changes can retroactively affect data you have spent years putting into the tool. Examples: Google, Zoom, Dropbox, Tumblr, Slack, Adobe, Figma.

A self-guaranteeing promise about privacy gives you proof that the tool cannot access your data in the first place.Encoding values into a governance structure is not self-guaranteeing. Given enough motivation, the corporate structure can be reversed. The structure is not in your hands. Example: OpenAI.

Open source alone is not self-guaranteeing. Even open source apps can rely on data that is stuck in databases or in proprietary formats that are difficult to switch away from. Open source is not a reliable safeguard against the biases of venture capital. Examples: Omnivore, Skiff.

When you choose to use a tool, the future of that tool is always ambiguous. On a long enough timeline the substrate changes. Your needs change, the underlying operating system changes, the company goes out of business or gets acquired, better options come along.

It is possible to accept the ambiguousness of a tool’s future if you choose tools that make self-guaranteeing promises.
