I.T.'s job is to provide a protective shield around an organization. User actions are like little "pores" in this shield, as people often need to escape the shield to do their jobs. And you know what they say: I.T. never reigns I.T. pores.

Liquid Glass in 27.0
I wrote previously about upcoming design changes to Apple’s 27 series of OSs, but I didn’t run any of the betas myself. From afar, the changes all looked great to me. After having installed the updates at launch on Monday, I’m very happy with just about every visual tweak. But, believe it or not, I still have more grumbles about Liquid Glass.

I grumble a lot about Liquid Glass, but it's because I'm torn between loving the effect and being annoyed by readability issues. I also massively prefer dark mode, and even the clearest appearance now has a bit of a milky hue in dark mode now. After testing clear modes, I'm back to full tinted.

I love the new Device Hub in Xcode 27. So much better than the Simulator! Now you have key display options available in a sidebar, and they update the device in real time. Also, you can actually change Liquid Glass settings now! Huge time saver, and great for screenshots.
A screenshot of an iPhone 18 Pro in the new Device Hub as part of Xcode. On the right, there's a sidebar showing a number of configuration options, including light/dark mode, Liquid Glass state, Text size, Increase contrast, Reduce transparency, and a lot more.

Apple Watch: privacy promises won’t fix how it feels
Apple held its iPhone event on Wednesday, and the hardware announcements were exactly as rumoured. As usual, the surprises were in the software. I’d been planning for months to replace my first-generation Ultra, and was excited to see what new features the new Ultra might have. But two of the new features now have me worried about the future of wearable tech in general.

Yesterday, Stephen Hackett wrote about changes to the traffic light buttons in macOS Golden Gate beta 6. I think these new buttons are a big improvement, and the change gives me hope that other things could be “unflattened” in future versions of the OS.

I like to test my inks for water resistance. Sometimes there's more than I expect, other times there's fun ink separation! This is Diamine's "Good Tidings" from the 2024 Inkvent Calendar (though, my bottle looks far more blue/purple with a green sheen than all the examples I'm seeing online).
A small sheet of paper with some writing that's been washed away after being run under water. The dark blue-ish ink has separated into reds, greens, and blues. The paper is sitting on some paper towel where the separation is even more apparent.A swatch card with dark blue/purple ink on it. The ink has a green sheen to it. The bottom of the card reads "Good Tidings – Diamine (2024)" (though it originally read "2025", and I overwrote the 5 with a 4 after double-checking the date).A small (30ml) bottle of ink. The label reads "Fountain Pen Inks By Diamine" in a fancy golden script. Below that large header is the text "Good Tidings" in silver on a dark purple background.

We applied for Apple's Small Business Program on April 27 — three months ago as of Monday. Radio silence. We're eating an extra 15% from our meagre revenues thanks to that. But if Apple could use some of our unearned revenues to fix sub pricing on ASC, that'd be great. 😡

WWDC 2026: weird but better than I feared
This year’s WWDC keynote was an odd one. It was relatively short at around 76 minutes, for one thing. It also eschewed the usual OS-by-OS structure, but I think that’s for the best. The biggest change was that there was really only one major thing Apple wanted to talk about: “Apple Intelligence”.

I’ve been following Apple news and rumours since the year 2000, and I don’t think I’ve ever been less excited for WWDC. Apple’s software story is in rough shape, and I worry that this year’s event won’t do much to help. Perhaps it’ll be the beginning of an upswing, but we’ve got quite a way to go.
