Massive, continuing methane emission from LNG plant seems tied to efforts at carbon capture & sequestration (CCS). blog.datadesk.eco/p/does-chevr...

Does Chevron have a persistent methane leak at Gorgon LNG?
Satellite observations reveal high-volume methane releases at Chevron’s flagship Australian LNG export plant. It’s not clear if they have been stopped.

last sentence is the kicker: “There’s thinking going on that the US administration in its current form is the most AI-friendly administration you could think of,” he said. “Any departure from that unity of Congress and executive with the midterms looming could imply AI regulation risks.”

It's always very strange to me that many essential takes around Russian foreign policy are "economic anxiety and isolation are a valid excuse for aggression" as if Russia had not choice but to, y'know, do that

Of course the difference between drug boats and this is that this is now explicitly a public spectacle of violence - and that makes it absurdly disgusting. That a rotting corpse was really under the mask of a rotting corpse does not change much in that regard

afrelek @afrelek.eurosky.social · 09/10/2026
btw if you start with politics based on replacing material concerns with jouissance obtained from authority-sanctioned violence/spectacle of violence, it's rather obvious that you will inevitably get to public executions (what else were the drug boats?) Videodrome as politics, politics as Videodrome

Ivan Turgenev's "Execution of Troppmann" is a short essay, published in 1870, that gives a first-hand account of the writer attending a public execution in Paris. Turgenev's details how the drunk, unruly crowd turned a somber moment into a carnival. A deeply moving essay; I encourage you to read it.

FATALITY
A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates: overall takeaway from the Curtis Yarvin profile is that there must be millions of smart-aleck show-offy kids who annoy their teachers and go on to annoy other adults through their lives with their “contrarian” pose that hardens to a carapace over their faces; until, as adults, they still harbor a delusion that, if there is a king, or a fuhrer, he’d be impressed with the guys motor mouth and appoint him to his cabinet rather than deleting him with a negligent swipe of his wrist as Stalin did routinely.

AI #slopaganda is not so much about fakes or disinformation. It's about aligning the world with your preformulated descriptions of it, making reality disappear behind its formulaic image, rendering visible all your fears at once in order to enjoy them more. It's a technology of fascist daydreaming

None of these features is mere sloppiness, they're all symptoms of the way genAI works: the 3rd eye is added to the established pattern of a human face the model cannot deviate from; the Roman Empire is what «antiquity» means in a latent space derived from Hollywood epics: a costume, not an epoch …

Yes, but neither was 1.5 with overshoot. If we just stick to what is politically/economically realistic, we might as well forget about the PA goals. The task has always been to do whatever we can to move the goalposts on what is realistic, and make the impossible not so. All else is inadequate.
