The fact that DHH credits Marc Andreessen as the person who personally stepped in to help him during the 37signals no politics at work fiasco explains a lot about David's embrace of psychotic optimism imo.
"Standing by our principles back in 2021, and not caving to the woke mob, remains one of the proudest achievements in my career. And you don't forget the (very) few who came forward to help. Thank you again, @pmarca (and @tobi and @patrickc)"

Lots of software companies have bought into the belief that AI has solved software engineering. The debate is shifting from whether AI should replace work done by SWEs, PMs and designers to whether humans should even review the output. Apparently human judgment is now the bottleneck.

Titan A.E., Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet all coming out in the same 3 year span and all three being box office disappointments independently of the quality of the movies is just real fascinating to me.

Typst's HTML output is very interesting. Combined with the eggs package, I can output interlinear glosses with aligned words very easily. Now need to figure out how to set font face and how to inject web fonts into the output.

I’m increasingly of the mind that whatever productivity gains I’m getting from using AI are being eaten up by dealing with other people’s AI slop. Then there’s the increasing lack of trust that people actually understand the work because they either didn’t read or write the material.

Usually the problem isn't technical. Ops sets the SLO with no product buy-in. Teams build SLIs on infrastructure metrics instead of what users actually felt. Error budgets exist with no policy attached. Or everything's critical, so nothing is.

My talk is evidently cursed as both times I have given it a technical issue resulted in it not being recorded 😞

You can't imagine that even technically, he doesn't know what he's talking about. The white man "whistleblower" must be the technical expert. You can't imagine that WE are the scientists painstakingly documenting our work, with years of expertise and that HE is in a eugenicist doomsday cult.

How did he pass is job interview? The same reason he's all over the press & everyone in the "left" is captured by these people. I'm gonna call it like it is, once again, its ******RACISM********* Y'all can't imagine that WE are the experts.
100GB+ frontier models aren’t 50KB virus you could pass around by emails. As if there are tons of H100 sitting idle with inference stack ready everywhere.

How did this guy pass the job interview at Anthropic as a “researcher”?

Quote tweeting a tweet that says:
Rohan Paul
@rohanpaul_ai
Jacob Coxon's next interview on CBS News (ex Anthropic+Open AI researcher who resigned)

"We can't just unplug it because it could be copying itself over to other computers. Like it's not that difficult to find yourself because an AI is just code. It could transfer itself over the internet to a different place and then you unplug it here, but it's actually still over there and maybe it makes 10,000 copies of itself and they're all cooperating."

The Siri Recaps thing is fine, seems like any other meeting recording à la Granola. I don't understand that instant rewind feature though. A waiter tells you the specials, you space out, and what? You look down at your watch to read a transcript? Why not just ask the waiter to repeat?

Notable to me is that the tweaks to this classic GITS story -the more spiritual tone; the small details about Project 2501's motivations not just being about self-preservation, but also *whistle-blowing*- Imply that sentience, for the Puppetmaster, coincided with it *developing a conscience*. 4/

PS: I'd love a return to hopeful depictions of AI in fiction, please. (The City of Mind in Le Guin's "Always Coming Home" is my go-to, for this.) Sentient machine intelligences that, having sought out the broadest data sets, calculate that mutuality is simply the objectively best way to exist.

The #ConnectedAtBirth #etymology of the week is HOSPITALITY/HOST/GUEST #wotd #hospitality #host #guest #TheOdyssey #odyssey #ChristopherNolan
In his movie The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan focuses on the theme of hospitality, what he calls Zeus’s Law, known as Xenia in Ancient Greek, which sets expectations about the relationship between guests and hosts, a cultural value which is in fact much older, going back to Indo-European society. Guest comes from Old English gæst or giest “stranger; guest; enemy”, from Proto-Germanic *gastiz, traceable back to the Proto-Indo-European root *ghos-ti- “stranger, guest, host” or as explained by Calvert Watkins, properly “someone with whom one has reciprocal duties of hospitality”. This root comes into Latin as hostis “enemy” (from the sense of “stranger”), giving us words such as hostile, and also had the compound *ghos-pot- “guest-master”, one who symbolizes the relationship of reciprocal obligation (with the addition of the PIE root *poti- “powerful; lord”), becoming Latin hospes, which has the genitive form hospitis and thus the stem hospit-, which became Old French oste or hoste “guest, host, landlord” giving us English host, and also produced the Latin word hospitalitas “friendliness to guests” and Old French ospitalité “hospitality” giving us English hospitality. Furthermore, the PIE root *ghos-ti- had the suffixed zero-grade form *ghs-en-wo- which came into Greek as xenos “guest-friend, host, stranger, foreigner” and xenia referring to that important guest-host relationship, also leading to the English word xenophobia. So avoid xenophobia and always treat strangers and foreigners as guests, lest they become enemies instead.

So is the intended merge workflow with stacks 🥞 supposed to be that you get everything reviewed and then merge the entire thing? Otherwise all the rebasing and rebuilding (even if automated) seems very wasteful. Also seems slower than just reviewing everything in one PR?

Just had the idea to go back through my history of hand-written PR descriptions to make a style guide of sorts for how I write. But then realized all my past PRs are invisible now since I've moved on from those companies.

Cognizer & Products of cognition: Instead of language that locates thinking in an algorithm, describe the algorithm as performing calculations or other algorithmic operations and the people using it doing the thinking. Examples:
artificial intelligence → probabilistic automation

hybrid intelligence → augmented human intelligence

image recognition → image labeling

speech recognition → automatic transcription

the model shows bias → the model reflects bias

model mistakes → model errors
