New paper in iScience. In the mirror box illusion, you see the reflection of one hand where your other, hidden hand should be. Over time, people report feeling the hidden hand where they see it, not where it is. We found that the qualia of this illusion differ across individuals.
Figure showing five types of time course for the mirror box illusion. Each row shows a series of mirror box diagrams over time, with perceived hand position in red. Sometimes participants abruptly feel their hand is where the mirror reflection is (abrupt trials). Other times they feel a gradual shift from the actual toward the reflected position (gradual trials). Some trials fall in between (intermediate trials). On other trials, they feel their hand is at the reflected location as soon as they open their eyes (immediate trials). And sometimes they experience no illusion, perceiving the hand where it actually is.

NIH to continue discussing only the top 1/3 of applications. This is a disservice to the research community. Fewer applications will get the higher quality of review from discussion. Applicants will get less nuanced feedback from review. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

New paper with Liz Spelke, @rebeccasaxe.bsky.social, and @ashleyjthomas.bsky.social! We find that when 4- to 6-month-old infants observe two individuals share saliva, they infer that those individuals have a close relationship. Free access link: authors.elsevier.com/a/1niQg_Oow0...
A conceptual schematic illustrating the logic of the studies. (A) Infants observe a central actor who shares saliva with one actor and does not share saliva with another actor. (B) From such observations, infants may infer and represent whether the actors are connected and how thick each connection is. (C) These representations support infants' expectations of who will respond to the central actor's distress.

Not stated strongly enough.
Without notifying Congress or the American people, DoD has signed an interagency agreement that could give the Department access to billions of dollars that Congress provided to NIH for critical biomedical research. These funds were provided to support research to develop treatments or cures for infectious diseases such as influenza, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, Ebola, and other dangerous pathogens.

It's like a parody, but it's deadly serious; the Commerce Department (which includes Census, NOAA, and others) has outright deleted "don't alter or suppress scientific findings for political reasons" from its scientific integrity rules. Seriously.
Protecting against "inappropriate influence" is no longer a "hallmark" of scientific integrity

The Commerce Department updated its policy for promoting a "culture of scientific integrity" in January 2025, days before Trump's second inauguration.

A new Trump administration order bans the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis from using statistical “noise,” or data for fuzzing survey results, to protect people’s privacy in their statistics.

The 2025 version included bans on attempts to shape or interfere in data collection, statistical analysis and other scientific activities "against well-accepted scientific methods and theories or without scientific justification."

The department's policy, the 2025 version said, involves ensuring scientific findings at its agencies "are not suppressed, delayed, or altered for political purposes and are not subjected to inappropriate influence," as well as making sure there's "independent review of facilities, methodologies, and other scientific activities as appropriate to ensure scientific integrity."

That language is missing, however, in the Trump administration's revision of the policy, according to an NPR analysis of text posted on the Commerce Department's website.

And while the revision adopts a definition for "scientific integrity" that is similar to the previous version, it no longer says that "protection from inappropriate influence" is among the "hallmarks of scientific integrity."

AI "summaries" of academic journal articles make me especially angry. Like, the authors carefully constructed a summary. It's at the top. It's the paragraph or bullet points at the top. It was written by experts, underwent peer review, may even by translated by subject matter experts. Right there.
