I am entirely serious when I say that this should be seen as a moderate position. It specifically and surgically dismantles institutions that did not exist pre-9/11 and assigns their functions much as they were assigned pre-9/11.

Oh that is interesting. At the very least the gop is having to dump a lot of money into Texas v before when they did very little.

It dawned on me this morning that the onslaught of political ads we are getting in Texas must be what other competitive states experience. Oh! We’ve never had competitive statewide races in the 30 years I’ve lived here. We do have tons of Talarico signs in the area & almost no Paxton signs. Maybe??

The only way anyone would celebrate Columbus is if they didn’t read primary texts (or were themselves genocidal murderers and rapists). Rejecting Columbus Day isn’t brainwashing or wokeness. It’s telling the truth about a horrible and evil person.

In Am lit survey I teach primary text Columbus-his letters & de Cuneo’s letter. Students show up for the class looking shell shocked at the frank descriptions of murder and rape perpetrated by Columbus’ group. Then they read de las Casas & see that in his own times Columbus was condemned.

I mean… immigration enforcement is not well loved. I’ve spoke with people who voted for Trump and they all admit that Texas is built on migration. This is only going to play with a small percentage of people. That’s why the state wide races are close- for the first time in 30 years.

This is real. One quibble. The article says Texas A&M doesn’t use ai to censor. TAMU uses ai to review all our syllabi, and the admins have admitted it’s inaccurate.

The campaign of educational censorship sweeping Texas and other GOP-governed states in the name of “free speech” and “diversity of viewpoint” in many ways exceeds the worst of the McCarthy Era (gift link obvs) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
You have to go back to the loyalty oath cases of the Cold War period to see relatively analogous situations where the government was trying to silence academics with viewpoints that they didn’t like,” Emerson Sykes, an attorney with the ACLU, told me. “But even in those cases, we did not see the sort of brazen attempt to ban particular ideas or ideologies and scrub them from the public record or from public education.”

His wool is sort of less fluffy than a cotton ball, but still soft. Our breed tends to be hit or miss on softness depending on which side he pulls- might be long merino or a shorter more primitive wool. We shall see!

In my Gender and Jim Crow class, we have a whole session on lynching images. I don’t show the victims, I show the crowds. We zero in on the faces in the crowds, their expressions, the children, the mothers, the picnics, the jubilation…all of it.

I’m not sure which you are referring to, but she’s not wrong that for the most part lynchings are in the service of white supremacy and mostly conducted by white people. Ida b wells has the stats. If we add in so called riots it’s far clearer.

I always struggle with using lynching photos when I teach. They are exploitive and horrific, but students need to understand how lynchings we’re spectacles that families attended, at times bringing picnic lunches . I find Marisa Parham’s work on Black violence so helpful.

The “discomfort” white people feel when we discuss race is an inheritance that was taught to them. Teaching children to become complicit in the horror of enslavement and segregation is horrible too. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a masterpiece b/c it tells that story of that negotiation.

@beaubaumann.bsky.social is right: everyday, until the supposed day of public execution, is a struggle over the message. I would add two things: First, when I say that the Civil War taught us No Kings, No Masters, this is what I mean. The master had sovereign authority over the plantation.
