That's maybe 20, 25 dollars for a meal for four and a single burger meal at Maccas is not that much less than that. Vegetarian meals are even cheaper. The only reason fast food is economical is economies of scale, but even that falls apart if you use bulk ingredients at home

I agree that it's dependent on where you are and what your local prices look like, and individual vs family can skew things. But like for burgers: I can make four burgers for 5 dollars in buns, 12 dollars for 500g of mince, maybe a dollars worth of potatoes and a coiple cheese slices/mayo/BBQ sauce

Also time is a hugely underrated factor here; working from home means I can turn the slow cooker on in the AM or just get my workday done early so that I have the time to dinner prep. Eating out is not cheaper than cooking, but modern time demands make cooking a lot more difficult than it should be

This never fails to make me feel insane, and I am working hard to ensure that I encourage my kids to experiment and learn how to cook now in their early teens, which is not something that I ever really did as a kid. Hell, I didn't really learn to cook *well* until we moved to AoNZ five years ago
