I never do that, because I prioritize and choose to live (with my child) in walkable, bikeable, transit-oriented communities. U.S. policy (federal to local) does facilitate sprawl and car-dependency, though, so choosing to avoid this is difficult.

We have a toddler and other conflicts, but we host dinner parties (or just have people over for drinks as that's easier for us when we're home at night with the kid), we go out, we make an effort. Yes other people are busy but part of living in society is making an effort for other people. /FIN

...some point you just have to accept that they're not very close friends. Maybe that's just the dynamic between you two (you're actually not close/high priorities for each other, which is OK), but I do think people need to make an effort to accept social invitations when other friends reach out.

I didn't mean it as direct criticism, just that I haven't experienced this problem esp. as it relates to dinner party invites. But I pondered it a bit more afterwards, and you're right, I think we all have friends (or "friends") who always decline every invitation, always have a conflict, and at...

Side note: I've seen comments on this and even re weddings (!) about people not even replying to RSVP. I think, especially if you're inviting people in an informal way (i.e. text), give them a deadline. A lot of people (myself included) will punt on anything unless you give them a deadline. (2/2)

We like to cook for the dinner parties we host, but the point is it doesn't have to be hard. You don't have to clean your house spotless. Per other comments, invite people over to watch a game (or political debate) and ta-da!, there's also dinner on the table. Just invite people over.

Candidly, we have never had this problem, and I'm having trouble understanding it. We (parents of a young kid) had a dinner party last month, and host several a year. We invite people, most RSVP yes, some RSVP know, people show up. This has been the case for us here in CDMX, in Baltimore, in DC.

We love hosting dinner parties. We had one last month. We cooked everything. We have a toddler at home. We literally eliminated buying a house we were considering because it had nowhere for a large dining table to go (and a proper dining room is a high priority for us, in large part bc of parties).

Right. Also, Chicago (plus DC, Philly, NYC) also have transit-oriented suburbs, so people who want some urban amenities/access but still to drive a lot have that choice. (Such suburbs don't exist outside most U.S. cities, but they do in these!)

I've heard several recent @npr.org stories, incl this yesterday by Deepa Shivaram, that cite utility bill & enviro reasons for widespread, bipartisan AI data center opposition. But what these reporters are missing is that opposition is deeper than that, it's to AI itself. www.npr.org/2026/09/01/n...

Trump's pro-data center stance is putting pressure on Republicans ahead of midterms
Trump's pro-data center stance is out of step with voters. Republicans are trying to navigate the issue but it's putting them at odds with the president's AI agenda.

I'm a fan of the book/the idea but also a big AI skeptic. I pulled the book and checked the index for AI, and you're right: they present AI solely in breathless positives, whose only concerns are generating enough clean electricity to feed the beast.
