Good grief. Wandsworth Council’s plans to “tackle the gridlock” & “get Puntey’s roads mvping again” all involve stealing space & time from pedestrians in a self-defeating effort to increase traffic throughput 🤦‍♂️ Really bleak, horribly misguided stuff

Theoretical physicist Maria Goeppert Mayer died #OTD in 1972. She shared the 1963 #Nobel Prize in Physics (w/Wigner & Jensen) "for their discoveries concerning nuclear shell structure." She was the second woman to win a Nobel in #physics. (Who was the first?) #WomenInSTEM
A classic black-and-white portrait photograph of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Maria Goeppert Mayer, taken in a classroom or lecture setting. She stands in front of a large chalkboard filled with handwritten nuclear physics equations, nuclear mass data, and element symbols (including notations like I¹²⁹, Cr⁵², and various alpha, beta, and gamma values). Goeppert Mayer has a thoughtful, focused expression as she gazes upward slightly, with her lips pursed in concentration. She wears a patterned dress with short-sleeved matching jacket with a geometric black-and-white design, a pearl necklace, and her hair styled in soft curls. In her hands, she holds a wooden slide rule.

These councillors make me sick. Before posting this stuff, they should be forced to cycle the alternatives. For Ilford, it's either a full-on dual carriageway bypass, a series of service roads where you play chicken with drivers of the No.86 bus or chancing it through the pedestrian area which
Facebook post

"Councillor Khayer Chowdhury is at Ilford Town Centre

Last week, Redbridge Police held an operation in the town centre to tackle footpath cycling and moped riding. A number of riders were issued Fixed Penalty Notices.
I am pleased that the police are finally taking action on this and I have asked for these operations to take place on high streets across the whole of Redbridge.
Many elderly residents and parents with children have complained to me about footpath cycling. Riders need to slow down, get off the footpath, and be considerate to vulnerable pedestrians.
Use the road instead please!"

It is over a selection of photos with loads of police walking through a pedestrianised area and in one, talking to a delivery rider.

In 2024, more than 1,600 people died on UK roads. Yet a major new road safety strategy has passed largely unnoticed. This reflects media acceptance of road danger and a societal complacency—an “it won’t happen to me” mindset. Sadly, it can, and by then it is too late. How do we change this?
