The thing I miss most about early Twitter is the pretty standard (then) practice of hashtagging posts with a broad topic so you could a) find other posts about that topic or b) know what someone was talking about if it wasn't something you knew about or c) mute them if you were never going to care.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Lots of "I hope someone tells these proles to turn off their phones and not talk through the performance" commentary in response to NYC's Met ticket giveaway, as if theaters aren't already overrun with people who pay hundreds of dollars to leave their phones on and talk through performances.

As of today, the CDC has changed (reverted) their Covid guidance to make the vaccine recommended for all people over 18. In addition to being a smart public health move, this recommendation also means insurance must cover it. Read more here: www.cdc.gov/covid/hcp/va... Listen to a breakdown here:

This is my take as well. If you create a car that spontaneously accelerates because of how it’s designed, nobody says the car went rogue. You, who designed and sold the car, are on the hook. It’s not everybody else’s problem. Can’t keep it from spontaneously accelerating? Don’t sell it.

IMO, the solution should not be to browbeat people into an old standard, but rather allow people to wear whatever they want. If someone can wear ducky pajamas in public, you can wear tailoring in any cut, color, and material. As options open up, dress can then be a source of pleasure.

man this is so fucking real. literally i think about this every damn year
“For the 9/11 issue specifically, it distilled the hypocrisy surrounding 9/11 perfectly. This was during the golden age of The Daily Show, but I’d still say that The Onion had reliably the best take out there, largely because the mainstream media had all this jingoistic bullshit everywhere.

See, for the people who lived in New York, 9/11 was a very different experience than it was for the people who didn’t. It was a very personal thing that happened and it happened locally, and the mainstream media took the narrative away from us very quickly. All of a sudden, it was this thing that happened to America and we had to be “strong” and “patriotic” and “support the troops” — all of these things that didn’t reflect our experience as New Yorkers.”

I see a lot of people actively losing their minds about the AI stuff and I'm honestly starting to feel bad for them. But it's blinding them to the real problems. These things are not your girlfriend, but they're probably going to smash-and-grab passwords and attack bank or government data.
The observation that the most alarmist claims about A.I.’s impact seem to come from the individuals most connected to Rationalism should anger us. This exaggerated grimness makes it easy to overlook the more immediate harms created by these technologies, such as their potential use in cybersecurity attacks, excess resource consumption, impact on our cognitive fitness, role in undermining education and amplification of soul-deadening slop.

This style of anxious talk also allows the A.I. companies to portray themselves as the reluctant “stewards” of an inevitable technology, which is a framing they can use to deflect blame for damage caused by their own products.
