if there's one thing we've learned from the history of popular music, it's that people don't want to hear the songs they like over and over and never form attachments to artists, but do want to hear a stream of new songs generated by no one that sound sort of like the songs they like, this is logic

"[BLANK] is over you don't just realize it because current A.I. is out of date but secret new A.I. I've experienced will absolutely blow your mind" is the Canadian girlfriend/friends laughing just out of frame of 2026 meanwhile Muse absolutely sucks why didn't Meta just release the secret new A.I.

An interesting case study for this idea is Jonathan Lethem‘s FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE – which contains just a dash of the speculative, which drew very mixed reactions at the time. Personally, I was a fan.

More lit novels would benefit from a single small intrusion of the speculative, or the irreal, if you like. Can be nothing but a sentence! But when it happens? 🤌

Exceptional solidarity from ASU hockey players who have demanded their coach be placed on leave for essentially overseeing the murder of their teammate and have disputed the university’s findings. www.nytimes.com/athletic/764...
Seven Arizona State men’s hockey players asked the university’s president to place the Sun Devils’ coaching staff on administrative leave pending further investigation into the workout that left sophomore transfer Matthew Mayich on life support.

In a 26-page letter sent to ASU president Michael Crow on Monday and obtained by The Athletic, the players disputed numerous findings from the university’s initial review of the Aug. 20 workout, writing that Mayich did not receive water and was provided inadequate medical care after his collapse.

Opinion | The Four TV Shows That Heralded America’s Fall
Four TV shows, now acknowledged as the medium’s high point, each cannily predicted the ways in which America would start to crack apart.

In no particular order: Andor, Succession, Deadwood, The Shield, Chernobyl, The Office UK, Arrested Development, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Severance

I know everyone's mad at the star of this show for his subsequent questionable antics but there's no rationale for ranking THE OFFICE UK, which absolutely changed the course and tone of TV comedy, lower than THE OFFICE US, which very successfully adapted THE OFFICE UK

Biggest snub: either RECTIFY, BLUEY, or FIREFLY, depending on who you ask Pleasant surprises: CHERNOBYL and I MAY DESTROY YOU both ranked as high as they deserve Notable omission: ENTOURAGE? Has not aged well but made a huge splash and nominated 3x for Best Comedy www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

It's out! www.nytimes.com/interactive/... big news is BREAKING BAD in a mild upset beats both THE WIRE and MAD MEN, and also that my Top 10 prediction only had 9 shows. My 10th would have been 30 ROCK at #9 so I missed on THE AMERICANS, which came in at 17, beat out for Top 10 by GAME OF THRONES

my pet theory is that VEEP is going to do surprisingly well (like top 5) for various Reasons > it's a really good show > people have a lot of affection for JLD, rightly so > people recall it fondly in part for its vaguely Resistance-y vibe > it never fell off in the way LOTS of other comedies did

GIRLS is one show here you could confidently move from bubble to no-brainer I'm kind of surprised to will rank in the Top 20 overall though I'd be waaaaaay more surprised if it didn't make the top 100, so it feels like a lock if I'd guessed ahead of time though I'd have put it at ~ spot 25

Alternative response programs, where mental health clinicians respond to 911 calls instead of police, have proliferated since George Floyd's murder. What does it take to do this work well?

Numbers 21-40 dropped! This is a poll of ~500 people, so I can't speak to "What were they thinking?" Nor do I always agree! Worth noting, though, that each voter submitted 10 *unranked* choices, so rank is largely a function of how *often* a show was listed. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

it makes sense this is limited to shows that debuted in 2000 or later but of course that means no SOPRANOS (or SEX AND THE CITY, or WEST WING, or FREAKS AND GEEKS). It also means there's a de facto vacant spot at #1 (or #2 or #3, depending on your tastes) www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
