JSTOR’s shared collections make room for surprise. Scholars and the archive-curious can explore them through stories from @jstordaily.bsky.social! 🕳️ 🐇 Fall down a collection rabbit hole: bit.ly/4nWOkgy Image: Harlem World flyer, @cornelluniversity.bsky.social.
Flyer for a hip hop event titled A Super-Natural Electric Gigolo Boogie Jam, held on Friday, December 18, 1981, at Harlem World Entertainment Complex in New York City. The flyer is mint green with black text and features stylized typography, hand-drawn embellishments, and cut-out photographic images of performers. It advertises performances by DJ Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Jazzy Jay, DJ Red Alert, Cosmic Force, and special guests Funky 4. Additional highlighted artists include Keith Keith, Sha-Rock, and Jazzy Jeff, with a note about “The Two Queen of Rap,” Sha-Rock and Lisa Lee, issuing a call to “any female MC.” Designed by Eddie Ed, the flyer captures the early visual language of Bronx-based hip hop culture. Decorative corner elements and playful language reinforce the grassroots, DIY energy of the era.

As someone who writes about visual culture, specifically political visual culture, I just can't get over this banner. In an increasingly aesthetically clean, monochromatic, paired-back world, a banner so retro it could easily read 'ice cream & balloons' is such a bold choice. Love it.
Image shows Zohran Mamdani standing behind a podium, smiling with his hand on his heart. Mamdani is surrounded by a crowd of people, and above is a banner which reads "Afford to live & afford to dream".
