New from History UK: a valuable and interesting survey of UK history students use of and attitudes towards GenAI in HE teaching - their preliminary report is published today: bit.ly/4hatsRR The report is by Dr Sarah Jones and Dr Simon Peplow @simpep.bsky.social #skystorians
Opening page of History UK's statement on their survey and report on AI and History Students in UK universities. Full text:

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become impossible to ignore in higher education. For historians, working in a discipline which depends on interpretation, evidence, and critical thinking, the development of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has raised particularly significant questions. In 2026, we launched a survey to gather the perspectives of people who are often overlooked in considerations of the impact of AI and appropriate responses – history students themselves.

Behind the statistics are the students. Those going on to History at university make an important choice. You'll gain perspective, insight and judgement - and how we need these now. You'll learn to analyse and articulate; you'll work with experts; and you'll likely thrive with subject you enjoy.

New from me: Until recently, the gap between comfortably-off and just-getting-started could plausibly be crossed in a decade or two of hard work. Growth in asset prices means that’s no longer true: even a lifetime of striving doesn’t offer a realistic prospect of feeling you’ve “made it”.

Someone has been arrested in connection with the death of Ann Widdecombe - that means publishing anything, including posts on X, which risks seriously prejudicing a trial, is an offence. It also doesn't help her friends and family in obtaining justice. Link in next post...

Nigel XYY man @NigelXYYMan. 14h
No it doesn't. He's not been charged. Arresting somebody is not the serious.

You obviously don't understand the law. It's only subjudice once, the person is charged with a crime. Police arrest people all the time. It isn't that serious until you're charged.

David Banks @DBanksy
Well. I co-wrote three editions of McNae's Essential Law for Journalists and specifically the chapter on contempt, so I think maybe I've got a better grip of it than you.
Schedule 1, Contempt of Court Act 1981, says proceedings are active once someone is arrested. Look it up.
