The majority of Kiwis will be better off with the Greens plan, but somehow everyone is panicking about “taxing the rich”. You’re not “the rich” they’re looking at. And if you are, an extra 2% tax on your wealth would hardly be noticed.

It’s the usual - the rich are trying to convince us that 1) it will apply to everyone (it won’t) 2) it will apply to your family home (it won’t) 3) we are all somehow property speculators and have multiple properties (1/3 of houses are owned by very few investors)

And if you're going to judge people or make them feel bad or stupid, they just aren't going to be curious around you. People do deserve grace and patience, because when the stakes are this high, you have to ask yourself: If it more important to be right? Or to change the government.

It's critical to remember we have NO civics education in New Zealand. Ppl do not necessarily know how MMP works, how a coalition works, or how to best make their vote reflect their values The more you can make talking about politics normal and chill, the more ppl feel they're allowed to be curious

It's always been hype. Every time they say "our AI agent went rogue and did a thing", they are describing a computer program that didn't work the way they wanted, not a sentient monster that decided to run amok. AI is just a new computer program, but saying that doesn't raise billions of dollars.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Damn. With the alt text:
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture':
[Section highlighted]
whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship.
[End highlight]
When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.
