The fox needs access to the hen coop ASAP, to prevent disaster
At the conference in Dubai, Ellison began with a joke about Musk before warning the audience that artificial super-intelligence was coming sooner than expected.
What, Blair asked him, should governments be doing about it? "The first thing a country needs to do is unify all of their data so that it can be consumed and used by the Al model, Ellison responded.
Ellison was also specific about which data needed unifying - and he had an example in mind: "The NHS in the UK has an incredible amount of population data," he
declared, but it was too "fragmented" at present. Below him, the former prime minister nodded, clutching his Tony Blair Institute (TBI) notebook.

Great piece by Joan Wallach Scott about her father & others targeted by the McCarthy Inquisition, and - inevitably - the similarities of our institutions to today's right-wing moral panic. Highly recommended.
We are again confronting a massive attack on the very foundations of democratic education and, this time around, the stakes feel even higher. In the 1950s, the targets were individual teachers—communists, progressives, liberals—and their left-wing unions. Now the target is the system itself. Its value as a public good is being redefined as a matter of parental choice (vouchers, charter schools, home-schooling, all paid for by public funds), and its commitments to principles of equality and justice—to say nothing of truthful accounts of history—are being trashed. In their place, stories of violence and greed are forcibly imposed to glorify our nationalist destiny. I am reminded—for a second time in my life—that the stakes we have in a democratic system of education are always under threat and that, for those of us who value it, the fight for its preservation is an urgent, if never-ending, challenge.

Amid all the tough talk about “elbows up” and its more liberal values, last month Canada quietly toughened up its border policies in apparent alignment with the US. www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/art...
Canadian immigration officers have been given broader powers to cancel travel permits and visitor visas under new rules designed to bolster border security and clamp down on fraud.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued “strengthened” regulations, including the ability to revoke visitor visas if their holders destroy their passports. Officers can also rescind authorization to travel to Canada if they believe a visitor may not leave the country.

Airlines have been informed of the new rules, which could also mean some people will not be allowed to board flights, according to a notification of the new regulations in the federal government’s Canada Gazette.
