This is a better epilogue to my January story about the private equity firm profiting off of ICE's cruelest flights than I could have ever possibly hoped for. CHICAGO: You went to the mat and protected (at a minimum!) thousands of immigrants from torture. Take a bow. prospect.org/2026/10/02/i...

Some good news for a change: Overcoming a massive and aggressive tech lobby and a squeamish, Silicon Valley-friendly governor, the labor movement has managed to pass a raft of first-of-their-kind AI laws aimed at protecting workers in California.

So the plan is to spend millions (billions?) to put satellites into low earth orbit that contain server hardware that can only run for 15 minute bursts and can never be recovered, recycled, or repurposed? Forgiving these dipshits would be a massive moral failing.
Once commissioned, the satellite will fire up its TPU in 15-minute bursts to avoid straining the satellite’s power and thermal management systems. This satellite is based on a standard platform built by Planet Labs, but the two companies are working on a demo expected to take flight next year that will see two satellites more purpose-built for advanced compute. Those future versions will attempt to collaborate via a laser communications link. The good news, at least, in Google’s updated research, is that it seems likely that its chips will survive the radiation of space. The company had to redo tests blasting the chips in a particle accelerator after they realized the configuration of the chips provided more shielding than they would actually experience. This produced slightly more errors in the chip’s logic circuitry, but the company is still confident its chips can handle large inference workloads in orbit for the five-year lifespan of a satellite.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

there’s nothing i want more than to witness Random Scalper Attempts To RICO The Pokémon Company International we’ve all earned this
screenshot of tumblr post from user “ayeforscotland” which reads:

Pokémon scalpers who were hoping to rip people off for the 30th anniversary are crying and shitting themselves because there's enough stock for
everyone.
#ayeforscotland #Pokémon #pokemon

the post itself is a screenshot of a discord conversation between two users that reads as follows:

SoHo Icey 2:50 PM
I don't know what to do. I maxed out 3 different credit cards buying as much 30th Anniversary stuff as possible. Everyone was talking about it for over a year. It's the most hyped set ever. Why did they make so much? What am I going to tell my wife??? There is no way I can offload all of this at a profit and my local stores aren't accepting returns. I've been nothing but loyal to this brand for over 8 months and this is how they treat us? They knew it would financially ruin people. They knew the secondary economy they created.
They are no worse than a communist government controlling their currency. Pokemons greed ruined my livelihood.

Reggie B. 3:39 AM
I'm seriously considering taking legal action against Pokemon. It's disgusting that they didn't share exact print numbers, pull rates, and how big the supply truly is. They overhyped the set, making us secondary distributors the victims of their marketing. Honestly, this could be a RICO violation if we find that they purposefully did this to take money out of our pockets. No one has supported Pokemon more in the past than us, helping distribute the product at fair market value instead of underpriced MSRP. Reached out to a few attorneys already, if you want to get in just DM me. 30th Anniversary? This was the last straw.

Friendly reminder that Duolingo was initially concieved to trick people into translating articles for free, which they later used as training data for MTL algorithms. Duolingo's primary purpose has NEVER been about teaching you a language, even from the start! slate.com/technology/2...
If it doesn’t charge users and, so far, doesn’t serve them any ads, how does Duolingo make money? It tricks you into working as an unpaid translation service. At the end of some lessons, Duolingo will ask you if you want to practice by translating a real-world document. Which will turn out to be, say, a BuzzFeed article. By melding together enough stabs at this task from high-level Duolingo users, the app can render a surprisingly accurate translation. Which is worth good money. So far, Duolingo has contracts with BuzzFeed and CNN to translate stories from English into languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This service is already earning Duolingo hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but von Ahn predicts he will be adding a raft of new clients soon. “The language translations market is huge,” he says. “It’s a $30 billion per year market.”
