just because it made me happy and I thought it was extra pretty in the fog: my (back) yard’s past and present state; pics taken about 8 years apart
A blank green patch of sod surrounded by a wood privacy fence. An oasis that somebody actually cares about - pic taken from roughly the same angle, but now it’s all trees, flowers, and a paver pathway leading to a round patio. The fog-shrouded trees in the background make it look so nice, tho.

Gonna be honest, gang. The moment you convince people you can make a machine who is conscious and capable of suffering, that is the moment you should be introduced to John Brown's blade for thinking you can sell that person.

The rush to accuse, without anything approaching due diligence, artists of using "AI," should be treated with contempt. An artist gets their work *ripped off* to train a plagiarism machine, which then shits out inferior versions of that work, so then you accuse the artist of using "AI"? Fuck you.

There are some amazing gems hidden out there in the interwebs. Here Simone Dinnerstein does a deep but fun discussion about the form of the Goldberg variations. I've dabbled in it 12 years now, and have several favorite recordings, but never saw this until today. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNm-...

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

PSA: No Kings is a coalition, not an org, and it does not do fundraising appeals for itself. Partner orgs raise money for costs we're incurring to put it on. But if you get a text from "NO KINGS" or a PAC you've never heard of before asking for $ that is a scam and you should block/shame away.

The bellwether for any politician should be "human rights for everyone." Because if human rights don't apply to ALL humans, then they aren't "human rights" they're just demographics to manipulate for political gain. Empathy is a prerequisite, not an optional trait.

Political organizations seek power by persuading and mobilizing voters. “You helped elect Trump” reverses that relationship. The institution doesnt have to explain why it lost support, critics must explain why they failed to suppress their criticism enthusiastically enough.
